I have a squealing noise in my rear drum on my 97 300 four trax 4X4.It also seems like it just does it when you are turning. I have replaced cables , shoes and still there. I can adjust the wing nuts so it does not make any noise but when I do I have no rear brakes and no brake lock on the bars. And when you use the foot brake while your hand is on the hand brake lever on the left the brake lever goes limp and drops back to the grip. I have checked the drum and it seems fine and also the cam is in good working order. This 97 is like new but just has junk brakes except for the front brakes. Please help hunting season just started here in Pa and snow will soon be flying and will need it to plow with. Thanks

you need to tear your rear brake side all the way down..and inspect your bearing that rides in the backing plate..sounds like your bearings are bad from what your telling us...either that..or your axle nuts have worked loose..and need to be tightened on the brake drum...i'm beting your bearings are bad.

Thanks for the reply Shadetree . Would I need to replace the bearings in the differensal also. I found kits for both the backing plate and the diff.
Have someone else grab the rear racks and shake it side to side and up and down while you watch where the axle exits the side of the diff. Have them shake at around pretty hard and you can see the axle move if the bearings are bad. If the axle doesn't move and seems good and tight, you won't need to replace the diff bearings. Do the same test for the other side, once you remove the brake drum cover and you can see any movement that may be caused from a bad bearing.
