Just bought my first ATV, a 2002 Honda Foreman Rubicon. It was just rebuilt and I bought it from a consignment dealer. I drove it 9 miles through town hopeing not to see the law as the ATV is not street legal. Half way home the thing started to smoke. The smoke was minor at first and finaly got to the point where I stopped. There was oil dripping from under the seat onto the exhaust causing the smoke. The oil stick was ok and the motor ran great, so I kept heading home. By the time I arrived there was enough oil to mess up my favorite old tennis shoe (left one)- still showing oil on the last bit of the flat part. After the thing cooled I fould the problem, no cover on the exhaust valve. I found it at the bottom of the motor shield. So, I think I got lucky. I need the two bolts, and I hope that neither of the origional fell into the case. I assume I'd hear a clank or two if they did. So where do I get the bolts, and does anyone think I should worry about the origional bolts falling into the motor?

Welcome to the forums and congratulations on your purchase. I'm just guessing here, but I doubt the bolts fell into the engine. I would say that someone was adjusting the valves and just forgot the valve cover off. If they did fall into the engine, I don't think it would hurt anything, but remember, I can't guarantee that. I would think that they would make their way to the bottom of the engine where they would get trapped in the oil pump pick up screen and just lay there. But like I said, I doubt they're even in the engine.

You can get the bolts at your local Honda dealer. The bolts that you need are 6mm diameter X 20mm length, with a 8mm head size.

Thanks Helmut... I agree it would be unlikely to see the bolts in the motor. I'll replace the bolts and oil, clean the motor off and start riiding. The information about the bolt size if helpful. Thx again...!

welcome to the nutt house !..as far as the bolts falling off into the engine..i doubt it..seeing how you rode it that far..if they did fall inside..more than likely..you would have found out real quickly...lol..most ppl i know..spec myself..anytime i take the valve covers off..i have to pull the bolts/screws off to remove the cover..i guess after doing it for 12 years..it's kinda a habit for me ..lol..anyway..i think yu'll be fine..just change the oil..oil filter if it has one..and it should run fine..now..if you want..take a flashlight..and a long magenet..and feal around inside the top of the rocker box..if the bolts/screws fell inside..they might be somewhere right inside the cover..if not..then they probally was removed when they left the cover off.
