Hey guys, new to this forum. I have a '08 420 rancher that I put an epi clutch kit in and the next day it started smoking the whole time i ride it. Darker smoke and it smells rich. Pulled plug and its prety black. Its FI so no manual fuel adj. Any ideas on what this could be? Sensor bad or something. Im sure the clutch kit has nothing to do with it just odd it happened right after.

Since it happened after clutch work I would double check all the sensor connections first . Maybe you by accident unplugged some vital connections. Check to see that fuel line is not kinked or you left a rag in the air inlet or air box. Is it only smoking, however perform like before or is performance down too? Maybe injector need cleaning, try injector cleaner in gas. Maybe it has been sitting for too long and gas is bad. Could be faulty ignition or spark plug too. First I would inspect anything near your work area to make sure all connections are properly connected.

Are you saying that it started smoking on the first run after the clutch change or did it perform normally for a while and then start to smoke the next day. if it started smoking immediately, then Ltzukrider has pinned it.

i have never heard of any motor smoking like yours..right after you change a clutch..if any wires did come undone..or connections..this won't have any bearing on it smoking..engines don't smoke from the electronics if they get left unplugged..elec burning smoke ( short ) is alot different..lol..if your engine is smoking..it's either because you some how had or got oil in your ex system...or your oil rings are shot..and need to be replaced..may i ask why you replaced your clutches in a '08 model ??..did you sink it ?? and get water in your engine ?? did you use the right oil ? this maybe caused blow by..but this won't cause smoking from the ex ( muffler )..this will come out the blow by tube. how's your compression ??..have you checked it ?..if i were to guess.i would say your oil rings are bad, and you built up oil in your ex system.

I agree, unless it's flood smoke from something being left unplugged and causing the ATV to flood, since it's fuel injected.

There is fuel smoke and there is oil smoke. If dark (black) and smell rich you are having fuel smoke. On fuel injected engines all it takes is one wrong connection and you can loose power and it will smoke like a diesel. Amount of fuel injected is dependent upon sensors and connections working properly. Oil burn smoke will be more blueish and coolant smoke white/grey.
