Just did first full top end rebuild and looking for a little reassurance. Fired right up and sounds good. Took out for first break in ride. About 10-15min in noticed a slight smoke around top end. Can I assume this is from greasy fingers during rebuild? How long would that take to burn off before I should start getting nervous that it might be something else?

You could warm it up slightly, degrease the engine and that should avoid staining as well from burn off. Burning off the way you describe is going to be related to the overall amount of oil/type coupled to time/heat, so it will take a little while for this to occur...

Completely normal. Every single one i have rebuilt has smoked off after rebuild. Alot of it is oils from when the parts were cleaned. If you took anything to a machine shop they use a chemical degreaser that can steam off when the motor warms up.

When the engine is first built , it is tight and needs to break in , it will create more heat during the first minutes than after it has broken it , after reading all kinds of different break in procedures , it can be confusing , some say it takes as many as 100 hours to be fully broken in , some say 25 , some say 5 , personally I think the best thing to do it run it the first few times till it just gets hot then let it cool down , kind like a heat cycle , do this several times before even riding it , some say put a shop fan on the engine during these first cycles -------- and don't forget to change the oil

There could also be oil residue in the muffler if it was burning oil before. I had that with a Suzuki Vinson that I put new rings in. To speed up the oil burnout process I took a torch to it until the smoke mostly stopped.
