I found a big oil leak coming from the top of the motor just above the pull starter. Looks like a bad gasket. Is there anyway to fix this without pulling the motor? Maybe clean it and try to get something in the leak like some kind of gasket sealer?:icon_ cry:

are you sure it's your engine cover right there ??..it could be comming from your air box ?..if not..then yes..you will need to pull the motor in order to seal it..you cannot seal it up without removing the cover..and you can't remove the cover..without pulling the motor..sorry..wish there was an easier way..but..there isn't.

also..would like to add..most oil leaks won't happen on the top of engine covers..which seems odd from what your saying..before you go pulling the motor..make sure it is in deed leaking from around that spot !!

I agree, they usually don't leak on top unless the engine has been overfilled with oil or the crankcase vent is stopped up, but I guess it could happen.

i wouldnt think your motor would leak this soon... make sure it aint 80 or 90 weight oil. it will smoke up just like other oils if they drip onto the motor when it's hot.

For some reason the 300's hardly ever leak... well thats been my experience.
I've noticed alot of the rancher's having leaks 3 and 4 years old, actually on the motors themselves. Could it be that Honda is not putting out the same
quality as they used to???? I dont mean to hijack your thread btw. Carry on.

i agree on the part of them not making them like they used too !!..thats for sure..the old 300's hardley ever leaked oil..and if they did..it was either the cam seal..or near the kick starter area like i mentioned..other than that..they never leaked..well..unless someone put thier sign on..and decided to weld the foot shifter on the shaft..and melted the shaft seal ????..hmmm..some ppl !...lol

Thats what i was thinking. My neighbor just bought a new bike... maybe a 420... or 400... heck i can't remember. But i'll take my kick starter any day before having a pull start... Those pull starters, i believe are quite prone to leaking and getting contaminated. I've even seen where people remove the pull starters all together and put a plate over where it used to be..

They would also leak around the decompressor lever on the valve cover.

I agree, I would much rather have the kick starter any day. The pull ropes tend to leak and the ropes break, like you mentioned. And I also agree that Honda's quality isn't what it used to be.

i agree..forgot about that seal on that decompressor lever..they do leak..not strong enough i guess..gets too much heat..then goes on a coffee break !..lol.
