Hi, new member here... I'm looking to buy a used Honda atv years 2000 and up. I want to get one that I can select 4x4 if I happen to need it and ride most of the time in 2x4. I will be using it 90% for riding. Can someone tell me which years and models have this option? Thanks.

Hi, welcome to the forums. I know for a fact Honda's Ranchers, Foreman's and Rincons all have 4x4 option. If you go to their sight the year doesn't matter, as long as it's Rancher, Foreman or Rincon. They all have 4x4 option and great atvs. If you're looking more of a racing bike. I'm not sure on that one.

I know I have a 2002 TRX450FM and it is the first year of selectable 4x4 on a 450 . not sure if the 350's follows the same year break down , the earlier models of the 450 and 350 are both capable of having a Wide Open 4x2 selector installed on them to be able to shift it to 2 wd by a cable , I have a 2000 TRX450FW with a Wide Open 4x2 in it , but it is a project bike and I have never ran it , the 4x2 sells for $375 and installs fairly easy in about 1.5 to 2 hours , I have the kit on a couple of my TRX30FW's and love it

That may be the case for all the current model years, but it is definitely not the case for some of the models and years in the range of used ones he is looking at.

@CBishop53 It might be easier to come at it from the other way though, and have people say which models since the year 2000 do NOT have selectable 4wd, since most of them since then did have it.

So from fishfiles above we know TRX450's (Foreman 450) 2001 and older do not have traxlock.

I know 2001-2004 Rubicon's do not have it.

None of the Ranchers when they were 350's still had it. (2000 - 2006)

None of the Foreman 400's had it (2002 was the last year of the Foreman 400)

Others can add what models after year 2000 were full-time 4wd. If not listed, then they came stock with 2wd/4wd. That would be my approach if I were searching for a used Honda 4x4 2000 and newer at least.

Foreman and Rubicon 05-up were selectable and had front disc brakes.
Ranchers none of the 350's were selectable. The 400AT's from 04-07 were, but they're not great bikes and had drums up front. The 07 up 420 ranchers are all selectable with front disc brakes
Rincons all were selectable but the 03-05 had front drum brakes. 06-up had fuel injection and front disc brakes.

Wide Open 424's can be put into older models to make the front end selectable.

400AT Rancher, all 420's, 02-04 450 Foreman's, all 500 Foremans (14+ have diff lock also), 05-Current Rubicons (15-Current have diff lock), all Rincon's both 650 and 680.

So that leaves the:
86-89 350 full time 4x4, no aftermarket unlocker
88-92 300 Fourtrax, wide open kit for 93-00 can be modified to fit with longer shaft. $$
93-00 300 Fourtrax, Wide Open kit available
00-06 350 Rancher, Wide Open kit available
95-03 400 Foreman, no aftermarket unlocker anymore
98-01 450 Foreman, Wide Open kit available
01-04 500 Rubicon, Wide Open kit available

Also worth mentioning that the 2/4wd actuator on the 420's is manual lever operated and not electric, the 2012-2013 Foreman was the same.

Hey everyone, thanks for the replies. I ended up spending a little bit more than I wanted to, but I ended up buying a 2013 Honda Foreman 500 camo... I wanted the fuel injection, hehe. I was wondering if you guys could give me ideas on what to check/do on it before I take it out for a ride. Thanks.

Good choice..

Check everything that you would cover on the maintenance schedule. All levels, diffs, engine, coolant. Spark plug, air filter, tyre pressures, brake pads.
