Hi-If your engine is lacking power, check the ignition timing..Could be a faulty CDI unit, Pulse Generator..Also..could be a worn cylinder/Piston, Fuel mixture too lean, look at your carburetor settings also...

sorry to put it to you this way..but your problem could be a list of things..lol..anywhere from a stator...to pulse generator...spark plug coil..reg/rec..the list goes on and on..from what i have learned..most atv's will act like that when either the stator or reg/rec goes bad. you can rule out the c.d.i for now..if it wouldn't run/fire at all..then your c.d.i would be bad..this is a good thing !. either your reg/rec..or your stator is bad.

You're asking the wrong person about going into deep water with an atv, shade wears rubber boots in the bathroom. He's afraid of the waterLOL. But he does have a point, boats were meant for deep water. Did you seal the airbox lid? If you have taken all the precautions proceed with care. Remember, you gotta pay to play!!!!!!

I agree, there's no guarantee that water won't get in, if you ride in deep water. Seal everything up and snorkel all the vent lines and hope for the best. It won't take long to find out if you overlooked something.

can the reg/rec be tested ?
I don't have a service manual for the '89, but the '95-'00 service manual has the following check for the regulator/rectifier. I'm not sure if there's any differences in the two or not regarding the check, but here are the procedures, anyway.

also, i had previosly had problems with it not starting using the push button. I thought i had a problem with the sw switch/magnetic. ? Someone suggested that i hit a few times with a wrench. It worked. I no longer have problems with starting with the push button, but now it cuts out when i try to speed up . Any connection ?
