I'm concerned my fan isn't turning on, the unit is fan cooled not radiator. How much should it be kicking in? The sensor isn't lighting up on my dash and so as long as my oil temp sensor didn't randomly pack it in the last few days I should be good (fan was working fine a few days ago).

Temperature is around 14-18c and I haven't had to work the atv hard in the last few days. Just standard driving up and down back roads and once cross country through an old cut block. I didn't hear the fan kick in when we were driving through the cut block but I wasn't really listening for it. Worried that maybe some of bumps and whatnot caused something to fail. Checked the fan itself (can turn) and fuses are fine. No objects are obstructing the fan or have been anywhere near it. I can't really take it apart until I get home (skid plate bolts are somewhat seized, so no easy access to the under carriage).

Am I just being paranoid? Rather worried if there is a problem I wouldn't be able to tell until my engine cooks itself.

try unhooking the wire connection to the oil temp sensor, turn the key on, ground/touch the wire to the engine for a good ground, if the fan kicks on ?, then the fan is good. is posb your oil temp sensor is not working at it's best ?, this is what I think anyway ?, and yes, the oil temp sensor is what controls when the fan kicks on :).

Guess what I am really asking is if the oil sensor goes will my atv still detect if the engine is overheating?
No --- if the sensor fails your fan will not come on and your engine will over heat.
