Of all the people that would not run their engine out of oil it would be me.........but that's exactly what i did yesterday evening! Yep, the motor is fried. It started making a small knocking sound. I shut it down to check the oil.........off the stick! Oh well, I get a full quart of oil and dump about a third bottle........still below the stick!!!!!! Oh no! Dumped the entire quart in......full! How did I do this? It doesn't use much oil at all........it wasn't smoking.....blah, blah, blah. I start to sound like my customers when I say the same thing to them "you ran your engine out of oil". Really guys, I don't know how it consumed so much oil in such a short amount of time. I put a new carb on it about six weeks ago, fresh oil change and filter etc. I've mowed about four times tho. I did not check the oil ......I did not follow my gut on the last two times. I said to myself " it couldn't be very low, I just changed it. Besides it doesn't use much oil at all" Well I was wrong. I should have checked they oil like my gut said too. I was just in a hurry.......... Well guys, don't do what I did. I've been in business now for 36 years and it happened to me. I just ordered a new Briggs engine. The original Kohler wasn't even available! A short block was tho.......Over 500 bucks. I just replaced the carb at $90 my cost because no parts were available for it. The Briggs is around $560 my cost so that's the way I'm doing it. I may have to adapt a thing or two but at least now parts will be available for it. I'm disappointed in Kohler, they haven't been the same since using Chinese engines. Well I say Chinese engines because that's what they look like.

that sucks, nothing worse than a screw up that could have been avoided and knowing it
I am surprised more things don;t come with temp gauges, as a simple gauge would show heat building up and allow a person the option to maybe shut it down before doing damage
there even costly to add, but, then I gather, the makers want folks to kill things, so they buy new again>?

From reading in between the lines , I can tell you never checked the oil before starting up , I bet you do next time ------

this week I got a call from a guy who had a $5K re-maned Yanmar 3 cylinder diesel installed into his Takeuchi 3 years ago , he said it started knocking , found the belly pan got dented up and rubbed a hole in the oil pan , motor only holds 4 quarts , he says he put 3.5 in it when it started knocking , I told him he was about 3/4 of a quart too late

I got my stepson to mow my lawn and within an hour he managed to blow up the rear end, after getting the busted rear end out, I found a dry case. Not a drop of grease or fluid, thankfully I can get a replacement rear end for 50 bucks.

This thread was helpful to me , I cut grass yesterday and I damn sure checked the oil before cranking up , rode my 450 and checked the engine and rear diff oil , greased all the fittings , even aired up the tires

Yesterday my wife's 4 Rav was making a wicked winding sound , I was having a bit of trouble pin pointing it , took off the belt and the noise went away , narrowed it down to the alternator , this alt has a clutch in it , don't really know how that works , maybe it locks up when needed ----------- putting it back together was a chore , the belt was no fun , wife went shopping yesterday and I got a pack on new under wear , I would have charged someone $300 labor to do that job , so that about $100 a piece draws , oh and I checked all her fluid levels

I've never had to mess with this engine except oil changes one valve adjustment, (which it really didnt need) , new air filter and updated to an NGK plug, glad you brought this up Mac ....cause I've wandered if this is low oil cut off ?? I didn't get a shop manual with this purchase (coming coon)

Was that transaxle a hydrostatic unit (tuff torq) or old school gear drive transaxle ? Cause $50 is a good deal on a hydrostat unit! Heck I'd bite if i could find one (in good shape) for $50 .....

I ran into that same issue too, only the pest was those degum @&$'?:!! mud dobbers, i took some galvanized storm door screen, n some zip ties, and fashioned it over the tube, cured that problem, lol, mud dobbers, cause major issues with machines around here, ive even run nto plugged gear box vent lines!! AND yes ..... This is another place honda dropped the ball!! Every (TUBE design ) intake should have been (pre cleaner type) factory screened!

check the oil in everything!
Very True, but Not easily done .... When you have many machines to look after.

Some of the machines i operate have many gear boxes to check 7 alone! on my. Fwd closed station kubota .....SO.... I can understand ... SOME gear boxes being over looked due, to time, oil type/grease, and drive unit use, but! The Power plant?? (crank case oil) those should be checked. Before, and after each use!

This auger angle gear drive, died from lack of grease, a simple couple pumps of mystic grease is all the drive needed!! in the end i FIRED the gofer, but the whole deal cost me $800+ i bullet proofed the new gear drive. Live and learn

Got lube ??

My wood chipper gets a shot of grease every time it goes to work, always better to grease when warm so the grease will run within the bearing.
