Hi guys I am new to this forum. I manage an Olive Grove in north west Victoria Australia and also do all the mechanical work as well. I have 3 old high mileage Honda TRX450. One manual sift and two electric shift 1998 models. I am stumped with the electric shift on one of the units. I have checked through the fault finding and the relay switch, the angle sensor, ecu and wiring harness appear ok as does the earth and fresh battery and the shift switches and gear position switch. I test it in the workshop without the wheels on and it shifts smoothly then I replace all the body work and take it for a ride. The bike shift without any problems including reverse for about 10 to 15 minutes and then it seems to shift weakly before it stops shifting altogether and will have to be manually shifted to neutral. I have install a new electric shift motor about a year ago. I have tried 3 times to diagnose the fault and when I road test it the problem returns. Not sure if it is related to the bike getting up to running temperature. Very frustrating! Cheers looking forward to using and contributing to this forum.

Interesting problem. These units are very sensitive to "battery", so have you considered checking the battery when the unit is hot/not shifting? Reason for asking, you may have a charging issue, thus failing to keep electronics at a level to function correctly.

Great idea above.......there is also much talk about the grease in the gears being too viscous. Search the "sticky" on this subject. Basically it says to clean out the old grease and replace it with a white lithium grease if my memory serves me well. There are many here who know this subject much better than me and i trust they will give their opinions as well.
