Thanks for the info on decals. I've decided to keep the old tank. The old man i purchased from rolled it and broke his knee. So his knee bent the tank. I'll keep it for character.

So here i do on the restore work. The first thing i did was add a 2" lift. Since there are no lifts that fit this 1991 model, i modified the HL 2" lift Kit by adding spacers. Note the rear shock support brakes was a bugger to get on so i recommend using a longer bolt (3.5") to give yourself a little more room when attaching the brakes to the brake drum housing.

Ok rookie question. What is the best way to post Photos?

Valve Adjustment. So I followed the Service Manual on checking the valves. I found them set extremely tight. I adjusted them to the .006 or .15 mm rotated the crack a complete cycle back to top in and they valves were extremely lose at this point. Is this a timing chain issue.

1st Generation Winch Mount

So i scratched my head for a while on how to mount a winch on this 1991 Fourtrax and I found this solution only by accident while in Harbor Freight. The item is called a Hitch Mount Vise Plate. I cut the extension off that you would insert into your truck hitch. Then i cut the square plate to fit the front bumper and welded it onto the bumper. Next I mounted the contactor in an exterior receptacle cover like yo would use at your house. Notch out a couple of sections of the receptacle cover in order to close the box up. I will fill the notches for the cable with the black electrical sealant. The pic does not show it yet as i need to pick some up. I will follow up with wiring pics. View attachment 69617

1st Generation Winch Mount

So now i will try to explain how i wired this up. from the previous post, i mounted the winch contactor, right next to the winch in an exterior receptacle cover. Do this you need to switch the wires noted in the wiring kit as most folks mount the contactor in the storage box. So the long cable will go to the battery and short to winch. Just make sure you put some red electrical tape on each of the ends on one of the cable. To power the handle bar switch, i tapped into the auxiliary power outlet that is mounted on the handlebar see pic. I also mounted the remote winch switch on the handle bar console, that i keep in the storage box. In order to have both energized when key is turned on, i spliced the low voltage wires for handle bar and remote control switch together and covered with shrink wrap. Update Honda 300 Restore

So I figured out the valve adjustment process. For the rookies like myself, there or 4 strokes (i.e. 4 stroke engine) so you may not be on the right stroke and top in with the tick marks lined up. Once i adjusted on the top end stroke, she fired up before i could let the starter button go.

More on what I've done. I rebuilt the carb using a moose carb kit, but had to make small adjustments to get it it running right. I think there jets dont match the Honda oem spec. But it was not hard to get it running right.

For the plastic work I used 2000 grit sand paper and steel wool. The plastic was really scratched up. Once i had all the scratches smooth and clean, I put about 5-6 coats for Holloway Quick Shine Floor finish. See the pic of back fenders. You can compare the before and after use of Quick Shine. We'll see how long it last. Not sure.
