howdy,

I have an 07 honda rancher 420 maual shift 2wd... i broke my rear joint assembly... if anyone can provide some instructions on how to replace it i would appreciate it. i have only had it for about a year i bought it used from a dealer. I have added a scorpion street bike exhaust and 26" ITP mudlites and ITP SS rims.. TIA for any replies...

Welcome to the forums. I've never changed a u-joint on the 420, but it should be about the same process as any Honda SRA 4-wheeler. You will probably have to either, remove the swingarm and replace the u-joint or remove the brakes and brake backing plate and remove the axle and unbolt the differential and pull the driveshaft back and change it. The first option would probably be the easiest.

dropped the swing arm and removed the old joint... which side of the joint would be the easiest to put on first? the side from the block or the side from the shaft?

I don't know if it would make much difference, but I would probably put it on the output shaft first.

Catastrophic Failure

Need some advice ..My 2007 420 has finally failed after much abuse. I'm going to have a pricey repAir this time. My u joint hasn't failed but the spline on the pinion gear/rear drive shaft are shot. I know I have to replace the drive shaft and pinion gear, but what about the u joint and boot? Any help would be appreciated.

it won't hurt to take a look at your u-joint..seeing how your gonna have it apart that deep into it..you may as well inspect it..remove your swing arm..and take a look..as for the boot..if it's not ripped apart..reuse it.

I agree, just look the boot over good and make sure it doesn't have any rips or holes in it and if it hasn't, reuse it. I would say that since the driveshaft and other parts are in the condition that you described, that it would be a good idea to go ahead and replace the u-joint because it's probably in bad condition too. If you don't replace it now, while everything is apart, you will just have to replace it later.

I would definitely consider replacing it. the part is not that expensive and it will save you alot of trouble down the road. after i did the install above, i figured out that i was mising an oil seal for the shaft. had to tear it all back down again. parts should be here in a couple of days.
