In an effort to get rid of the all time 4wd, I'm considering buying a salvaged 04-07 rancher 400 front differential and front driveshaft. I believe it should bolt up. It will have some electrical plugs (3 i believe). I plan on getting the handlebar switch to make it look factory. I haven't studied the schematics of the 2 atv's to make sure it will work. I just thought I would throw a feeler out here to see if anybody has tried it or know if it is even a possibility? Is the Rancher 400 a locking front diff when you put it in 4WD? I don't know why there is 3 plugs going to it.

Thanks

I've never tried it, but it might work. None of the Honda 4-wheelers have a locking front differential, not from the factory anyway. I doubt if the wiring will work, because the selectable 4wd models have a 4wd control unit and operate with the input of the speed sensor and final front clutch sensors. You could probably still hook it up to work through a toggle switch or maybe even use the regular switch but you would have to figure out exactly how to wire it up. You would also need to be at a dead stop when you engage/disengage 4wd for safety purposes. The control unit system keeps it from locking into 4wd when the tires are spinning to keep from damaging something and for safety purposes.

Why is it you have to remind me of this on every forum we are on together? Just keep rubbing it in, why don't you! LOL :icon_ peace:
LOL. Well, he asked, so I was just pointing that out. I believe that might change in the near future, though, because Honda asked in there survey if anyone would be interested in having a selectable locking front diff. I would imagine a lot of people answered with yes. If I'm not mistaken the Honda Big Red side by sides have a locking front differential, so my guess is that the 4-wheelers will be next.

I'd love to! If you can help me find one, I'd appreciate it! I have searched and searched. I have one clean 350 that is perfect for me, I just need this one thing. The 424 would make life a lot easier than going this route listed above. So please help a brother out :icon_ peace:

The 4-2-4 Select will fit the 350 Rancher, but it has to be made for a 350 Rancher. They are model specific. You can't use one from a Fourtrax 300. It's just like buying a driveshaft, it has to be one made for your particular machine.

You can call ATV Outfitters they should be getting the 4X4 Selector soon I called a few months ago and they were working on getting them for the Rancher 350. I am not sure the brand that they are getting. I just know they told me a company is going to start making them again soon and they were one of the dealers set up to sell them

Yeah, the 420s have selectable 4wd from the factory. You wouldn't need a 4-2-4 Select for a 420 Rancher.

So here is the skinny on the ATV Outfitters selectable unit. I talked with Matthew Bell at ATV Outfitters. ATV Outfitters and another company that makes aftermarket honda shafts and differentials (he didn't mention a name) went in together and bought Warn's tooling/rights to make these units. He says they are doing the final durability/corrosion testing now. He expected them to be in production next month but for sure by Christmas. He is hoping to keep the price in the $300 range while maintaining the quality of the Warn product.

I did the 400at diff swap on my 350 rancher and it works super good!!! I used the 400 front diff, drive shaft and the 2wd/4wd switch from the 400, I changed the top cap in order to get rid of the auto/ESP switch. This is a direct fit, the only mod that has to be done a small V needs to be cut out of the 350 frame in order for the bigger diff to fit (you will see when you set the diff in place) the 400 has this cut out from the factory so it will not weaken anything! everything bolts right up no trouble at all! The wiring is just as easy also, you will only need two wires on the front diff. the orange and the white that switches it on and off, it will be the only two wire plug on the diff, cut the 2 three wire plugs off and toss them, there is only two wires on the diff now, orange is + white is - hook the white wire to ground and the orange wire to either wire to the 2wd/4wd switch then hook 12v from the key switch to the 2nd wire on the 2wd/4wd switch. that's it you are done. REMEMBER TO ONLY SWITCH 2WD/4WD WHEN YOU ARE AT A COMPLEAT STOP!!! works 100%!!! As of right now you can get everything you need on ebay for about $120 after the word gets out that this is a direct bold on the price will go out the roof!! if you need more info just ask. God bless
