How strange... I would normally assume positive and negative wires were connected to the wrong terminals but you say above this isn't possible..?

What did you service when you rebuilt the starter?

the motor could be wired backwards. the rv trailer, heater motor, i have is 12 volts DC. it has 2 wires going to the electric motor. my atv, on the other hand only has 1. the casing is the ground. there is no way to reverse, the flow of DC voltage.. inside the motor, however, the connections could be reversed..

Thanks that’s exactly what it was i had the armature 180 out—50-50 i would have installed the brushes correctly and I didn’t lol.
Anyway a portion of the armature was sticking on the brushes so i took it in to the local battery shop. They turned the burrs off on a lathe and put it back together for me.
I’ll install it tonight

my new plan is to buy an OEM brush holder.
it still goes backwards not the tech’s fault I probably used the wrong part. Years ago I got a parts box with an 87 starter and a Quadboss starter repair kit. Since the 87 used the same brush holder i figured I could use it on my 86 starter. I never even researched the part number.
Well I cannot swap the brushes sofar as i can tell. I’ll open it back up tomorrow and take a last look, but the part might be incorrect.

Thanks i checked the wires—even took the starter out of my running 86. The quad is good, my starter kicked it over fine. So it’s the project quad starter.

this problem starter barely worked when i bought the quad but it did work. Took it apart the brushes were fried and brush holder was completely destroyed.

i had an old Quadboss kit and the part number seemed to spec to my quad. After I installed the Quadboss rebuild kit the starter turned backward. I tried to reverse the polarity but the brush holder seems to only go in one way.

So i ordered a Honda brush and brush holder.
