Hello I have just recently took apart my Forman 500 2007. I needed to replace the rear swing arm and bearings. I just checked rear pinion gear fluid and it was full of water and gunk. I just replaced the rear axle seals bearings o rings last year as I had the tow hitch rip off the axle and relplaced it. The seal at front of pinion is leaking fluid for sure. I assume I should change bearing and seal . Any ideas on how to remove them ? Thanks

not sure on replacing the pinion bearing ?, you won't know that until you check it ?. as for getting the pinion seal out ?, a seal puller tool, or good old fashion screw driver and hammer will get it out, it just won't come out in good shape , but your not gonna re-use it anyway..soooo..go for it, destroy it !.

Another question the Honda parts guy has mentioned that the new bearings I am putting in the swing arm do not require grease. I am thinking he is incorrect. Any thoughts, most bearings I have seen always require grease unless they are sealed units??

he prob has sealed bearings ?, these have a seal on both sides of them, but still, when I get these types of bearings ?, I remove the seals, and pack more grease in them. if they are tapered bearings which you speak of ?, these always have to have grease, even the honda service manual tells you to install grease in the swing arm bearings. regardless, I always put grease on any new bearing.

Thank you. How much play would be tolerable in the pinion bearing? It has a little side to side but very minimal?
you should not have ANY side to side play on the pinion bearing. any play will lead to damage later on.

Thank you again , I figured they require grease. As for the bearing on pinion any tips on removing it?
this has been covered many, many times on the forums here. depends on which bearing is bad ?, if the main pinion bearing is bad ?, you can use a 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 piece of square tubbing, large pipe wrench, and unscrew it, or buy the tool ( large socket ) made to remove the large lock nut. then you can tap the pinion gear out. if you have to remove the pinion needle bearing ?...well..thats a whole different story !..lol.
