I've introduced myself already. I have ridden 4wheelers and dirt bikes for a long time. All my life really, I'm 42. I've just recently purchased my first, own 2004 Honda recon 250 es. I was riding today and noticed a clunk noise. After looking a little, I found the rear diff/axle is shifting side to side by at least 1/8 to 1/2". I can't think that, that much play is normal. I still need to replace the rear shoes. But does ANYONE have an idea of why there is that much side to side play. I tried tightening those large nuts on the axle, but still has play, yet no clunking. Thanks in advanced for any helpful replys!

Are you positive its the axle slopping in the carrier and not the whole swingarm slopping on its bearings at the frame pivot bolt? I know very little about utility quads but just something else to look at.

if diff ?, then I would think the carrier bearings are bad ?. if swing arm ?, then the swing arm bearings are bad ?.

Again! Thank you for the responses! I tore the rear end apart. And I wish I had the pinion but tool, but I was able to get all seals and bearings replaced. The rear end is so much better. I'm so glad it fixed. Still don't have rear brakes, but I'll figure that out later. Time for some trail riding now!!

So no damage to the shaft or gears in rear diff? If not, great news

I just had my rear left axle torn down and had to have entire axle tube replaced and outer bearings replaced. The outer seal broke and water got into the rear axle tube and ate everything but the axle up. When that outer bearing finally failed, man it sounded horrible! Funny thing is that it showed no obvious signs of a problem until failure. I thought my rear diff was gone from the grinding, popping sounds coming from back there
