:eek:hmy:

So as you all know i've been tearing into the rear end of 300 to install a new axle. After having to cut one of the castle nuts off :icon_twisted: i got both of the hubs off the axle nuts washers etc everything up to the seal of the brake drum and differential. Got the brake drum dust cover off with a little prying and i got in there and seen the drum.:icon_cussing:. It's pretty much screwed. Horrible shape, completely rusted etc etc. I never used the rear brakes for one, they never worked! Im not installing new shoes, drum, springs, brake cam, or any of that junk. It costs too much money to turn around and have the same problem 6 months from now. So i've pretty much decided to find an alternative solution to the problem. I've seen alot of pictures with 300 rear ends without the brake backing plate and drum. How hard of a modification is this operation, and will it provide any benefits or extra guards against water contamination. Im open to all opinions here, but im not putting a fan looking thing to push me through the water in it's place. I'd simply like to keep water out of the rear differential and eliminate my rear brakes all together. Thanks in advance, Tim.

without the backing plate from the rear brakes on..you won't be able to keep out water..they have seals in them for this reason...if you decide not to have rear brakes..at least keep the backing plate on..and drum..with a new seal in the brake cover..this will keep the water out...you don't have to put new brake shoes on....just use the brake drum..the drum cover with a seal..if you don't..water will get in the rear differental from that side.

You will have to keep the backing plate (aluminum piece), because it contains one of the axle bearings and seals.

What seals are you talking about? The only seal to the right on the drum is the seal in the brake drum cover and it just pulls/pries out after you remove the brake drum cover.

i was trying to figure that one out myself helmut..only seal thats to the right of the drum is the brake drum cover seal..that has a big silver washer that pushes up against it from the right of it.

Well there was an O-ring that came out from around the axle just inside the drum. I've been prying with a large flat head screwdriver trying to the drum off but it won't budge. Did i miss something?

you are correct on the o-ring..that drum won't budge until you pry that o-ring out...it just keeps water from getting in around the axle to the brake shoe area.

I've already pryed a few nicks and pieces off of my brake panel, trying to not totally screw it up.

Yes, LOL. The drum can be hard to get off sometimes, well most of the time.

try to pry evenly on two sides of the drum..if you get it in a bind..it won't budge..also..with a screw driver..or a punch..knock the brake shoes back inwards..as your prying the drum off..alot of times the shoes will get binded up inside the drum.

as a last ditch effort i took 2 lengths of 10g wire and ran it thru 4 of the drum holes, then went to yankin...(while also having my brother tap on the drum with hammer trying to rotate it.... idk what to do.
