Rear brakes 02 rancher 350

I am unable to remove the rt. axle nut on my rancher. The brakes are non functional. They do not activate. Does the nut on the axle loosen left or rt handed threads? When I use a large extension on my socket all I do is turn the oposite wheel. Tried putting it in gear and then I turn the engine. Have had two people leen on the oposite tire but I still turn it with the axle nut.
Any ideas? Please!!!!
