Going to put a new set of rings in my 300ex, should I use a arm type hone, or a ball type hone? Also when reinstalling should I use a little oil on the cylinder walls or go dry?
i have used both..as to which one is better..i personally like the arm type hone..does a much better job honing....deffently use oil when you hone..or you will damage your stones on the hone..i fine it best to use wd-40 when i hone a cylinder. if you don't have any wd-40.. who doesn't have wd-40 in thier homes ???..lol..you also can use just reg 10w-30 or 10w-40 motor oil..i just like wd-40 because it's easier to just spray into the cylinder, and it's easier to work with on the honing stones.

While I'm here I'm replaceing the rings and piston due to lower compretion and smoke at start up. Is there a way to check the valve seals?
Or should I just replace them while the head is off? The smoke does go away after the motor warms up.

I use both, I use the bead hone more though. when you but the gasket set they come with new seals. replace them while you have the head off and save a headace later.

I use the arm type hone with the three stones and I use transmission fluid as a lubricant to hone. I use a little Honda GN4 oil on the cylinder when installing the piston and rings back into the cylinder.

I would just go ahead and replace the valve stem seals, since it's cheap and easy to do.

After honing the cylinder, wash the cylinder out with hot, soapy water and run a white cloth through it until it comes out spotless. If it's not spotless, wash with hot, soapy water again and run a white cloth through it. Keep repeating until it comes out spotless. Then, coat with a thin layer of clean oil.
