Randomly dies followed by temporary no start.

Howdy folks, I have a 2007 Honda Rancher 420 ES, I'm starting to have a semi frequent issue with it and it's become more apparent after sitting all winter.

I'll be riding along and it just dies and then wont start unless I let it sit for 5 or 10 minutes, then it'll start up and run just fine for a while. Then it'll just die again. Doesn't seem to matter if I'm going uphill, downhill or on flat ground. Doesn't matter if it's at operating temperature or running cold. It'll only (so far) do it when under load, if it's just idling it hasn't done it.. yet.

Anyone have any ideas? I thought it might be something floating around in the fuel filter and getting sucked into the inlet.. but not sure...

I'd start by making sure that the fuel tank vent is not plugged off by Mud Daubers. Does it have spark at the plug when it quits? A known good spark plug in it, but NOT a Champion? Try to determine if it is a fuel issue or an ignition issue... inject some gas into the intake when its cranking and if it starts, its probably a fuel delivery issue. If it is a fuel issue check the fuel pressure next.

I'd also suggest dumping the old FUEL< that could be all your issue's right there modern ethanol fuel can go bad in a few weeks or LESS, so, if it sat all winter, and now running poorly
drain that old fuel out, start off with new fuel, TREAT it too, and a new spark plug and see what happens!

mrbb, I refuse to run anything with ethanol in any of my small engine machines, which in my neck of the woods means 91 or better, and I did treat the fuel last fall before storing it. None the less that was my plan, drain the tank, put in new plugs and see what happens. If it fixes it, yay! If not.. on to the next plan lol.

what ended up being your issue? My 2007 rancher is doing the same thing. When it dies the oil and over heat light come on, I shift back to Nuetral and start back up and no warning lights come on and it rides fine for 5-130 mins then does it again.

this post is old, I hate it when they never update what the problem was ?. as for your problem ?, my first guess would be the fuel pump, most trx420's had an issue with a defective fuel pump.
