Hey guys, so I bought a 2002 Rancher 350 TE project. Got it running good and everything seems fine except the ES. I can drive the quad around the yard all day using the emergency shift lever. It started out that I could shift into 1st and 2nd but not reverse. After re-seating the reverse lock sensor cable I got it to shift into reverse. Then yesterday it would only shift while sitting still and not while moving. Then yesterday it started shifting like normal with the buttons just out of nowhere. Now, today, neither shift button does a dang thing. I already tested the shift motor and checked the gears. I also cleaned the angle sensor. Nothing happens when you click the buttons...motor doesn't even attempt to shift. Another thing....so someone replaced the screen along the line. Would that have any effect on shifting? Because the new screen doesn't have the gear selection display in the window as it should. I wouldn't think this would play a factor but thought I would mention it. Everything else seems to work fine, runs great shifts manually fine, charges the battery, speedometer works....just no shift. Any input is well received!!!

hahaha seriously!!! So the idiot that owned it before me put the wrong display on and now it wont shift right??? Wow. So on that note, do you know which display I need?
this one ---> https://www.partzilla.com/catalog/honda/atv/2002/trx350te-2a-fourtrax-rancher-es/meter .
Thanks! I am going to look at the part number on the one on the quad and see which it is but clearly not the right one. Thanks again for your help shadetree. I will report back if that fixes the problem and which screen the person I bought it from had on there.

before you post ^^ ? , you should compare the listed price for any part you find on ebay to partzilla or rocky mountain atv !!, partzilla shows that same 182 dollar meter for 168 !!, NEVER ASUME EBAY IS CHEAPER THAN OEM FROM CERTAIN PLACES..LOL. never have figured out why those a-holes on ebay seem to think they are selling a part cheaper than anyone ?, and some folks see it..and jump all over it !..lmao.

So looked at the display on the quad and it is the one for the trx350fe, I have the trx350te....would this make a difference? Apparently it is the one for the es but why doesn’t it have the gear change section?

If the display you have on the bike is for an FE (37200-HN5-A12), then it has the gear indicator section as well, even though it doesn't work on your bike. I don't know how many differences there are between those two displays, just that they have different part numbers and cannot be interchanged.

Not sure if this matters but did you switch the STIFF grease out for all temp white lithium grease to help with shifting in the motor?

Hi: You say the speed shows up on the display? Does the back light -- light up the display when the headlights are on? -- I would say you have bad connections -- do you have a neutral light?

Hey guys thanks for your replies. So yes the part number on the quad corresponds to the display for the fe. Should I buy the one for the te? Yes the backlight turns on when I hit the headlights and the Speedo works but there is no gear indicator..weird right?

Hi:Try unplugging the connectors and check for corrosion.
I would do more testing before getting a new display -- the bike should run and shift without the display.

Ok I will do that and report back! Thanks oh also, is it unusual that I don’t even have the backwards L in the corner where the gear position should be? Cause even if that part wasn’t working I should still have that bracket in the upper left hand corner right?

Ok I must admit I am at a loss. I did some more testing and here are the results. First, the shift motor is fine and spins when fed 12 volts..however when pressing the shift buttons there is no voltage being sent to the motor. Also, I tried crossing the wires at the shift buttons which made no difference so it is not the buttons. I unplugged all connectors and cleaned them with cleaner even though they all look fairly clean. You are right, with the display unplugged the quad runs fine but still no change on the ES. I attached a picture below of the display and what it looks like when the key is on. No gear indicator at all, and I also noticed this screen was made in 2010...definitely not the original. Basically I am not sure what else to check. I am starting to think CPU maybe? Or does the display really have that big of an effect on shifting? However, that kinda of doesn't make sense as to why it did shift a few times before. Any ideas guys????

Hi: Unplug the Gear Position Switch and check each wire for continuity to ground as you shift through the gears with the shift tool.

Yes the Display is only Display.

Melatv,

I just did that just now and all of the gears have continuity. What should I try next? Also, did you see my picture of the display? Shouldn't it have a gear indicator section at least?

I not sure about the display -- you can unplug the display connector -- then turn the key on and check to see if you have 12 VDC on the Red wire on the harness side to the bike.

Also you can check the same connector with the key off -- you will check for continuity on each wire to ground as you shift through the gears at the display as follows below.

W/G = gear 1
P/Bu = gear 2
Bu/W = gear 3
Y/O = gear 4
Lb = gear 5
