Hi, I have a 2014 (07-13 bodystyle) Rancher 420 AT thats having some cranking problems. I’m the original owner and got it brand new. Super low hours/miles (150 hours, 280 Miles) so I wouldn’t think it’s anything major.

When I turn they key on, the dash lights (the neutral light, temps true light, etc) flash and there’s a clicking, or I guess like a ticking noise from a little box near the battery. I’ll add a picture so you can see. However if I flip the kill switch off, the dash and lights stop flashing and displays normally but it shows a “- -“ like it’s stuck in gear. If I turn the power back on it goes back to flashing and ticking. Every now and then it will stop ticking and I can try and hit the start button but it acts like it loses all power and start clicking again. I’ve tried rocking back and forth to get it unstuck but it’s not changing and I don’t think it’s stuck honestly. I’ve also tried shifting it into gear so I could hold the front break and crank it but the shift buttons aren’t responding since it thinks it’s stuck.

I’m not very mechanically inclined so I’m not sure what it is. I thought bad/weak battery but I’m not sure. Anyone have any recommendations?

Certainly sounds like a dead battery to me.

However, there may be corrosion on thos battery terminals which is preventing a good flow of electricity. But that may just be mud on there. How do you get mud on your battery, under your seat? Were you running under water or something?

Could also be a neautral start switch if it has one, or angle sensor whch I think it does have. I dont know much about those.

What I did was go online and find for sale the OEM Helm book for the Rancher. That is also available online for free either here on on other ATVHonda websites.

I like the big paper book and that's where I'd start if I were you. But first I'd check the battery to see why I wasn't getting any cranking. There is a fuse in there also, but that would, I don't think give you the clicking. It would just give you dead.

Searching internet or this website may give you a more precise procedure to determine what the issue is.

I know motorcycle batteries last only about 3 years, not 7 like my car batteries. My first ATV battery lasted abut 2 or 3 months. Defective.

Yeah I was leaning more towards dead battery myself but it’s been charging for awhile and it’s still doing the same thing, and I thought it was weird that it worked fine with the kill switch off. My light bar seems to work fine when i turned it on earlier too, so that’s why I was torn on dead battery or not. Im going to get a new battery and try that. It’s a simple first step and hopefully fixes it. Like you said it’s been years so it won’t hurt to replace it anyway lol.

Have you found a fix for your issue? I’m having the exact same issue with mine. Mine got to the point where the display won’t even light up anymore. I have replaced the battery, checked all the fuses, and I’m working on cleaning all of the connections now. Thank you

Has anyone figured this issue out? My kids 2015 started doing this same thing and I’m having a hard time getting to the bottom of it

Have you found a fix for your issue? I’m having the exact same issue with mine. Mine got to the point where the display won’t even light up anymore. I have replaced the battery, checked all the fuses, and I’m working on cleaning all of the connections now. Thank you
