Recently my 2006 350 rancher has developed a tick after running for around 15 minutes prior to starting. I let it sit for a week. Today I rode it around today on the farm and it started ticking again. This time when it started to tick it would bog in 1st gear when accelerating or when you goosed the throttle. So today I reset the valve lash, the valve lash was .011 thousands so I set it to .006 thousands intake and exhaust / T lined up with the arrow on the compression stroke. After resetting the valve lash I took it for a ride did the same thing, ticked and bogged when accelerating.

Has anyone had this problem or something similar to it? Any info or tips would be greatly appreciated.:smile

Does it sound like valve clatter? Or does it sound like a tick?

When I set my valves with the feeler gauges it still made some valve clatter... did it by touch method and still has a little play but no more clatter.

The bog is probably a separate issue and likely carb issues.

Eleven thousandths valve clearances indicate to me, a very poorly maintained or a neglected motor. But the biggest issue with .011" valve lash is the fact that the motor has worn that much over such a long period of time that those excessive clearances have probably destroyed the camshaft and lifter cups before now. The chain is probably shot by now too.

If oil changes weren't performed regularly, or if the oil was ever allowed to become blackened, saturated with carbon particles above its' dispersion & suspension capacity the entire motor might have reached its EOL moment.

It'll require a teardown inspection to learn whether its repairable or not, in my opinion. You should begin that process by performing an accurate compression test. If it reads quite low you'll have to decide on a reasonable spending limit you're willing to reinvest in it and then tear it down for inspection to see if your budget is gonna be big enough.

how does the valve seat look ?, these models are prone to have the valve seat work it's way out once warmed up.
