Today I sent out a cylinder to get bored out. The cylinder belongs to a 2013 Honda foreman 500. The lady that had it said it started smoking and she kept driving it. Over time the smoking got worse (unbelievable right?!!??) and she called me to see if I can work on. I am not a Trained small engine mechanic but I am good around them. I tore the top end apart and realized the piston is scored, and so is the cylinder. the top of the piston has a harden oil sediment on it. and the valves are covered in oil.... so my question is this: I just sent the cylinder out to get bored over. with the boring I get a new piston, rings, and gaskets. the ATVs is still at TDC. Will I have to mess with timing? will I have different specs with setting the valves? any help would be awesome!

Welcome to the board.

If you kept it at TDC you should be fine, but all you have to do to check is pull the plug on the right side of the motor (hex cap screw) and see if you see a "T" in there.

Yes, valves will have to be re set. .006.

I'd pull the valves and put new seals in them, make sure they are true, and grind the seats while you have it apart.

Thank you for a really quick reply!! as of right now everything is staying put. still got the "T" in the little window. I was actually considering sending the valves out swell because I don't have a "spring tool" for the valves. So ill give a call to the company doing the honing and see if they can just look over everything while its apart and have them replace everything....

Does that seem like the right thing to do, just to save time and head ache?

unfortunately I live in "Bush" Alaska. the closest auto store is a plane ride away. I don't even have a regular store here in the village. my village has 63 people in it. however I might order one if I run into more problems like this one.

little late to the party here, but I hope you at least know how to check the connecting rod at the top and bottom for any play ?, if the rod is bad ?, your wasting your money and time rebuilding the top end, it wont last !!.

Definitely do that. I just had to redo a 350 rancher because I checked the bottom of the rod for play, but didn't check the top of the rod to wristpin for play, and there was a little play there that made the bike go right back to smoking.

Motor has to be torn back down and the crank rebuilt. Lots of effort wasted.
