Hey guys, Billy and Mud suggested the Performance and Mods thread for posting my 250x build. Any chance one of the Moderators could make a stickie so all our builds could be found in one place? Hope it works out cuz i've been taking a bunch of pixs of my fab work. Also what's the best way to post up photos n this site?

Dooners 250X

Hope Im doing this right! Anyways here we go..

My Boy outgrew his ol TRX90 Sportrax about a year ago so we started looking for a quad that fit him better. The 90 was pretty sweet, and after a few mods it was actually fairly capable out at Pismo Dunes.

I knew I wanted to get another Honda and really liked the 250EX that my buddy bought for his kid, but unfortunently, I didnt have the dough to lay out on a new quad. After a short search, I got lucky on CraigsList and found a 92 Honda TRX250X about a 1/2 hour away. After a quick ride and some haggling I walked away with the quad for a cool $800.00:icon_ lala:

The good -
1. Last year for this model meant this was the newest 250x I was gonna come by
2. I had the money, started right up and ran real strong
3. Was straight up factory, with no hinkey engineering (thats where I come in!)
The Bad
1. Tires were shot
2. Plastic was all there but real weathered
The Ugly
1. Surface rust Everywhere
2. Steering stem bent in toward tank and off to the right

Yeah man this stem is pushing back toward the tank. Bought two pair of bars before I figured out what was going on.

Ive always liked the looks of the X bodywork. My buddy had one back when I was still rockin a '85 250R three wheeler:icon_ rocker:. Woulda kept the stock plastic but I busted it up perty good during a Tequilla induced roll out at Pismo! :D

Decided to widen it up a bit after the roll. This little tumble is what provided the motivation for the 400ex A arms.:yeahbaby01:

After doing a little research, I found that the 400ex A arms are an inch wider than the 250x's and bolt right into the 250x mounts, but need longer shocks as the lower mounts will be further out. I also found that the 400ex tie rods will work on the 250x as well.

Soo off to Ebay

I ended up finding some front shocks from a TRX250R which were in great shape internally but looked rough as a cobb for like $6.00 + shipping

Got a complete set of 400ex A arms for only like $20.00 + shipping. Turns out they were bent which wasnt that big a deal, as they were easy to straighten. I knew that the past owner had done some welding on the shock mounts, burning through the plated part of the arm in the process. I ended up cutting the mounts off the arms (smashing the crap out of my thumb w/ a 2 lb hammer!). When I got the mounts off, I found that there was a ton of rust under them, along with cracks from metal fatigue. Ended up grinding out all the rust, welding up the cracks and capping the plated area with 3/16" plate. Not much of a bargan after all!

Got some heavy duty tie rods for a 400ex for under $7 + shpg that took the 250x rod ends. These things were beef, but the threads coulda used some chasing, especially the reverse thread ends. They were a PITA to install and adjust toe in. Last set Ill ever need though!

We had already had a seat cover made up for the 250x and put on a set of nerf bars. The stock front plastic needed to be replaced after I busted it. Its hard to see but, I stiched the fender back together with zip ties and blue vinyl tape!

I tried the 400ex A arms and 250R shock on for size and found that I was going to have to raise the upper shock mount to make this work:icon_ banana:. Im not sure why this made me happy, I must need help!

Next step was to slice the upper shock mounts off with out screwing them up as I was planning to reuse them!

After grinding the frame smooth, I then mocked everything in at ride hight, guestimating suspension sag. Got some card stock and started fabing up the new upper mounts. Traced the upper mount plates out on 3/16", cut em out and tacked the whole thing up. :icon_eek:

The old upper mounts that I hacked off earlier were possitioned on the mount plates that I made. After burning the new uppers together, I made a cross brace out of some rounded edge L channel steel, which was joined with a second section to form a boxed section between the new upper shock towers.

Got a screaming deal on a new Maier race fender to replace the busted factory front plastic. It was a great fit and would have been easy to install, but the cross brace that I put between the upper shock mounts was now in the way of the fender mount. No biggie, a couple of cuts and a little welding and it was good to go.

Heres a few more pics while mocking up, painting and gettin it back together
