Is there a tool to remove the plastic push pins from body panels rather than trying to pry them out with a screw driver?

Yes, you can buy them at auto parts stores.

a pair of side cutters aka dikes work great.

I use cheap dikes. Gently pinch the head with them and pull the pin out.
