So, here's the start of my first project thread..
As most of you know this was bought for my wife to use, it was a non runner when I bought it, Turned out the original engine needed a top end build. A few weeks after owning this another 250a turned up on eBay cheap, so I bought it as it was said to be a good engine. Swapped the engines with a little excitement but turns out the donor engine is also bad, needs a top end build!

So here I am, at the point of a top end build, I'm thinking as it's such a basic ATV to tear down I may as well paint the frame or have it powder coated while I have the engine out, again.

I've already sorted out all the wiring (needs a solenoid), front and rear brakes are in good order along with rear bearings. Not to mention the damn carb issue that took me forever to sort out! I have all front bearings and tie rod ends in the shed ready to fit.

As you will notice, at some point in its life somebody bodged an old muffler/silencer on the back, I'll be after one of those soon if anybody has one they'd like to sell and has time to ship etc.

Yeah the fenders aren't in bad shape at all really, they have some light scratches but nothing that can't be made better. The rear has a small crack down by the left foot peg but I think I can repair that good enough that it won't be noticed.
Luckily I have all the plastic parts that usually get lost as well, storage compartment lid, tank collar etc etc.
I think so far all I need is a muffler. I haven't really gone through it that well yet, today I just paid attention to getting it spotless ready to tear down. A good old steam clean at 100C plus and some traffic film remover (with caustic) took care of that :)

Yeah it's quite a tidy bike jay. I'm not going to town on it but I'll certainly go through it and replace what needs replacing along with a fresh lock of paint on the frame.
Should look good once it's done .

Today I've called up all ATV parts suppliers that I know of here in the UK for a top end build kit. Apparently these parts are now obsolete here in England and all that is available is stock sized piston rings. Bit of a pain in the butt but I can still order from good old eBay when payday comes around.
@fishfiles @retro in the discussions we had about 250 & 300 top ends being extremely similar did we determine that timing chains were the same?
A 300 chain will fit a 250 and 250 will fit 300?
Or am I thinking of 350d?

Here's a photo of that small crack on the rear fender and of the two head bolts that I mentioned were rusted up and looked firmly seated!

Also, a picture of the plastic tank, glad I got that, certainly saves descaling a steel tank.

Cylinder is the same for 250's and 300's. The wrist pins are different sizes so you can't swap pistons. Rings should be interchangeable, but you'll have to find the proper piston.

Yeah I remember that, I did a little more google searching earlier and emailed a dedicated piston supplier, just waiting on a reply.

We're timing chains the same? My thinking is, whichever is more heavy duty I shall fit that to the 250 you see.

Not 250 related but a 300 front driveshaft question... Noticed when I turn I get a popping/clicking noise from the left, i can feel it through the bars slightly, is it possible to pack it full of grease as a temporary fix or is it likely to be shot?

sometimes you can grease them ?, other times..if they are too far gone ?, yeah..jeep is correct, just replace them, be done with them...replace both at once !!..no sense in doing it all over again later down the road.
