On my '04 400FA TRX rancher, this part started leaking. In a couple days if fuel valve not shut off it would drain the tank down to reserve. This primer pump or primer button was in accessible on my bike so I removed the two screws and made a rubber gasket to put in to stop the leak. My assumption was that I couldn't get to it to use so just plug it off. It worked leak stopped however now the bike is hard to start when cold?? Is there something I didn't know like vacuum operated or something. Fairly expensive part so I thought I'd ask before I order one. My maintenance manual not much help. Thanks in advance.

Pretty common for these to leak at that age–no they’re not expensive sofar as i know $40? Unless you’re outside US then yeah probably a little sting.
Several members here cut off the plunger and seal the housing with hondabond. I always replace them although it’s of little use for me. I don’t know why you’re now having hard start problems but can’t imagine it’s related.

Based on what you told me i would rebuild the carb and replace the plunger and starter valve. I think the real problem is deteriorated seals and starter valve

I would never pay Hondas price for that primer , you can buy them on e-bay for as low as $5 and that is one Chinese part that last , the Honda in Slidell Louisiana before they moved to Brown Switch Rd , was asking $90 for that primer to fit a 300 , I went in there one day and said give me 2 so I will have a spare , he says $198 , I was like say what , needless to say I didn't buy them , all you do is cut the shaft , pull out the guts and fill the back side of the cavity in with 3M5200 , you don't need the plunger and it won't effect the way it runs without it

I have bought two genuine primers off fleabay—search by part number and you’ll find many for sale. Some seller however are sketchy they advertise “genuine oem replacement” —lol—not the real deal.
Uhh btw ones I bought one was genuine Honda the other was labeled Kawasaki. They both worked well

Sounds like as I thought plugging the primer pump hole should have nothing to do with my cold start problem. Will leave it plugged and order a carb rebuild kit. Thanks.
Hard start could also be a choke valve but I don’t know your carb setup. It might not have one. Check out the great carb sticky we have
