OK, first post ever...
2009 Recon. Purchased used.
When decelerating, I'm hearing a popping sound from the exhaust. Not a backfire by any means. Just some of what I'd call "popping".
Machine has new OEM carburetor, new plug, good gas.
I checked the valve clearance on TDC and the .005 was snug but it fit. Made no adjustment.
Idles wonderfully; runs great.
Would just like quieter deceleration.
Your thoughts please.

Classic lean jetting. Thats how they meet emission requirements. Up the main jet size 1 size and pilot jet 1 size and it should do it a whole lot less or stop it completely. I would also check for a vacuum leak at the carb boot. Because that can make it run lean. Could also be an exhaust leak at the header gaskets, or where the muffler meets the header. Welcome to the forums!

SlammedRanger - Thank you, thank you! Don't know anything about jets. Don't know what size I have with the OEM carb to go one size larger. Have to research I guess. The carb attaches directly with no boot. Will verify tightness of connection. But first, I will be checking for exhaust leaks!

Ok, I wanted to circle back and close this thread regarding the "popping" I am hearing from my Honda 250 when letting off the gas. I received some good forum advice and was able to verify I had no leaks in the carburetor mount or exhaust system. But the "popping" still bothered me so I took my machine to a Honda dealer for their opinion.
The mechanic listened to the "popping" on deceleration and said, "That's just normal for a Honda". "You could drill out the plug on the carburetor and adjust the air/fuel valve and that might help but it's not necessary. And we can't do it because of EPA guidelines. Even some new Hondas sound like that. I wouldn't worry about it."
If only he knew how much I had worried about it!

SlammedRanger hit the nail on the head. When you let off the gas and hear a popping u general are lean on the pilot jet. Where do you live? Does it start a little hard when it's really cold out? IF so, thats a classic sign that along with the "popping" that the pilot jet size is too small.
