When i ride my grizzly at night the fisst part or the head pipe glow so red you would think it was on fire, my TRX450er did the same thing i was told i was normal the pipe is real thin and not to worry.

Check the rubber boot between the carb and the head could have a crack in it or be loose sucking air making it run lean, just a thought, those boots do crack with age.

the reason were doing work ourselves is because of economy the closet atv dealer is 200 miles from home now they closed our shop and originally we took there droped off they rebuilt carb and did other routine stuff charged me alot and then called us and told us motor was shot all they could do was order us onother one and we picked up came here you guys and girls told us to check timing and sure enough a chain later and lifhter assembly (tensioner to normall people not to honda ) the motor is running again and very strong but still not perfect

look in front of the carb bowl the air mixture screw goes straight up into the carb body where the bowl mounts to the carb body.

I know you didnt replace the cam but you are positive you have everything properly alligned? Also one thing that will cause a head pipe to glow is backpressure you may want to remove your pipe and make sure you don't have any obstrucions anywhere in the exhaust system, especially the muffler.
Where do you live? I live on the NC / VA Border as well.

Your machines may be running a bit on the rich side if you have never seen glowing on the pipe. It is a normal thing to see the very beginning of the head pipe glow at night. I have used that glowing pipe and toilet paper to start a camp fire. If you see it during the day... now that's another issue.

I would say JUMP would be a good option if you see it in the daylight! LOL
