Hello fello ATV'ers, I'm usually pretty self suffecient but in this case I'm phoning a friend. I bought a total basket case 1997 Honda TRX 90 ATV. The neutral safty switch and 4th gear switch are snipped and just hanging out. I want to eliminate these items, does the neutral wire (light green with red stripe) have to be grounded to start and the 4th gear switch (pink wire) need to be capped???

And does any one know how to test the CDI?

Welcome to the forums. I'm not too familiar with the TRX 90, but the neutral wire has to be grounded on all other Honda models to make the neutral light come on before they will start, so I would say it would be the same for the TRX 90.

And as Moose said, there is no test for a CDI, other than replacing with a known good one.

I have spent CONSIDERABLE time with a 93 trx90 that would not spark...I had a couple posts on here that had sound advice....but the problem was never resolved. I REPLACED EVERY PART of the electrical system...including the wiring harness to no avail. One day I moved the ground from its usual spot to a new one. BINGO! It fired right up. It ran so well I gave it to my nephew for his birthday. They rode it several times around the house...and then brought it to a shop to have a once over done. Well they "rebuit" the carb (I still dont know why--as it was spotless)...and couldn't restart it---NO SPARK! They never did fix it...and my brother just picked it up and brought it home. Its the %^#$ thing that one day you can pull it and it starts and runs ...and the next day there is no spark. I am convinced that the cdi is not grounding somehow...and maybe it has to do with the neutral start switch. I would also lead you in that direction ...find out exactly if the thing should be grounded or not. Best of luck!

Where did you move the ground from? And where did you move it to? I also have a 93 trx90 that I have replaced everything on and still no spark
