well i just got done rebuilding my motor 2002 Rancher 350 TM
i havent started it yet just got it back on the frame tonight and i started to try and shift though the gears it shift very roughly and you have to play with it to shift it goes up 4 gears and seems like it skips neutral and then goes to reverse but then you can still shift down like it doesnt stop ive tried playing with the clutch it just changes it a little but its still far from shifting wright what did i do wrong? thanks for any help on this one i dont know where i went wrong

how far into it..did you rebuild ??..top end ?..lower end ?..did you remove any of the covers from the front or back ?

Hey I completly took everything apart from top to bottem.

clutch plates ( disk )..won't keep it from shifting right..this is a tranny problem..just went through this same problem with my trx300..yes..i know you said yours is a 350. your gonna have to take it back apart bro..i know..that sucks..but..it sure beats trying to run it like it is.

Hey ya i know and it does suck. im just trying to get an idea before i blindly go tearing into what do think it might be something with the shift forks or drum? and thanks for the help

more than likely..you got one or two gears either facing the wrong way ??..or your shifting forks are not set right in the shifting drum...just had this same problem with my '96 trx300..lol..after about 20 times of putting it together..taking it apart..and it would not shift right..come find out..on the last tear down..and very..and i mean VERY CLOSELY LOOKING AT THE GEARS AND THE WEAR MARKS ON ONE SIDE...i had put one on upside down !!..no..not by mistake mind you..i was simply going by the service manual..the problem was..the picture where it showed the break down of all the gears and the way they go on...did not show the fine detail..as in..which way the gear goes..they have a raised center..i call the coller..and from just looking at the book..i couldn't see this..but..after looking at the center of the gear..and looking at the gear with i call dogs that go above it..this is when i seen that the gear was on upside down. soo.tear yours apart..inspect each and every gear very closely..i hope you got a service manual..it does help alot..been doing rebuilds for 14 yrs..and they do come in handy..what they don't teach you is..up close and personal shots of each part.

hey shade tree i tore it back apart today i didnt see anything wrong so i guess i just going to be real carefull this time! lol i am also rebuilding my brothers same model just got th case back together today and it works perfect thanks for the help

your welcome float, just watch what piece goes where and how !!!..i made that mistake on my trx300..it's real easy to do..after 14 yrs of rebuilding atv's..i never have had a problem putting them back together..well..20 tear down's later..come to find out..i was putting the damn gear in upside down !!..not because i wasn't watching what i was doing ( going by the manual every step )..but was following what i thought was the right way according to the pic in the book..sooo..we all make mistakes..and when we learn from them..that was a well taught mistake !

hey i took the gears apart and found i had the m3 gear that the shift fork goes into upside down
