Hey guys, noobie here, Steve (Fossil). I might be in completely the wrong place here but thought maybe someone here could help me with a question. I have just picked up a Honda 250SX three wheeler with a starter clutch issue (I think). I am basically a bike guy and keep a garage full of the two wheeled fun machines, but I found this three wheeler and have always thought they were cool so grabbed it. Looking at the OEM exploded parts finders, I see that this model was made in '85, '86' and '87. Mine is an '85. The part number for the electric start one way clutch is 28125-HA0-000, ONLY for the '85 model. The number for the other two years is 28125-HA0-681. The problem is that I can only find the part for the '86/'87. Does anyone know if the two parts are interchangeable? I know with Yamaha bikes, sometimes a part will have a different number for use on different years/models but is actually the same part. I realize probably most everyone here has moved on to four wheelers but thought I would ask. I don't know if this same clutch was ever used on any of the four wheelers or not. Thanks for any help. Steve

It looks like the starter clutch should interchange for all 85-87 year (250SX, 250ES, TRX250A) ATC/TRX models. The starter driven gears, the flywheels and the mounting bolts all interchange among 250s, so the one-way bearing must interchange too. My guess is the original part number was superceded by the newer part number, possibly because a different vendor supplied the newer part, or possibly the newer part was an improvement. Honda plays games with part numbers... Welcome to the forums!

Thanks for the replies, guys. I'm not great on the computer but I will try to post some pics as the project goes on. I have had an issue, on some other forums, with the size of my photos being too big and have had little luck in resizing them so they will post. Anyway, your thoughts are exactly what I was thinking since I, also, compared the other mating parts for all three years and found them to be the same. I guess I just wanted a "second opinion". I installed the one way clutch, that I received today, on the kick starter and it fixed that issue. I also ordered the clutch today for the electric start, after pulling the starter and seeing that it is working fine. Also the flywheel on that side spins freely in both directions so the clutch obviously IS the issue there. I am looking forward to getting it going and think I will really enjoy it. It looked pretty sad, when I got it since it had been sitting for who knows how long still dirt-caked. My experience riding/racing dirt bikes for decades, has always been "ride/race on Sunday, wash on Monday", (or as soon as possible). So many ATV guys I have seen, almost never even clean their machines, and do nothing to them until they break down. Obviously this trike was owned by someone like that. Anyway, thanks again for the input. I expected nothing less since most forums I have visited are a good bunch, ready to help. regards, Steve

As far as parts interchange goes , an example I have been thru is the 85-87 TRX250 Fourtrax , the 85 was a lot different , many parts don't interchange , swing arm , axle length , hubs , brake drum just to name a few and the parts for that 85 were a one year thing , hard to find them even used ----like Retro mentioned sometimes parts will interchange even though the part numbers are different , 85 seems to have been a transition year , the ATC250ES was also different in 85 than 86+87 , I have never had a 250X , don't know a lot about them

yes, it seems the mfgrs like playing games. i don't see why they would have a part that is the exact same part as used on different years/models and assign different part numbers to it, unless it is a ploy to keep you from using a part you already have (or can get elsewhere) so you will buy the "correct" numbered part. Just a thought. I have noticed, in the case of this three wheeler that, probably because they are no longer produced/sold, the used parts prices are really high. And even some repop plastic is expensive. I thought I would just pick up an aftermarket rear fender piece, but at $300+, I think I will just patch the tears on mine. Anyway, still excited about the little jewel. Hope to be riding it this week. I thought I would post a pic of the sad little mongrel as it was when purchased, then follow up as I work on it but I can't figure out how to post them. I see where it says to "drag and drop" but I have no clue how to do that. Maybe my kids can teach me.
