I was riding Sunday and my quad lost power and cut out on me way back in the woods. I smelled that burning oil smell. I couldn't tell for sure but it looked like a little trail of oil leaked out on the ground then too. I had recently changed the oil and filter and I may have over filled it a little. Did I blow a seal or something??? After I let it sit for about 10 minutes it started up and I drove it home slowly. I was surprised it made it back with no problems. Doesn't look to be leaking now and oil is in it. Maybe the leak is high up?

Any advice?

Assuming you are using the 350 shown in signature. First, I'm assuming you are using a wet clutch approved oil. With that said, I would ensure the rubber o-ring is not leaking where you installed the filter or those bolts stripped or drain plug is loose. If all that is okay, I would further inspect the air filter to ensure no pressure or blockage problems as well. Now, I do not know the "proper" way to check the oil on that machine, so it may or may not require you to screw in the dipstick in before a reading. I'm confident someone here or in the manual it will be stated. I would, however, check it with the bike cooled off and not hot.

pull the dip stick, stick it back down in the engine, but don't screw it in, pull it back out, read it. seeing how ya just changed the oil , go back and check the drain plug, oil filter cover, look all around at all the oil seals, some are hidden, like inside the es transfer gears behind the cover, one behind the pull start cover, and one at the front output drive shaft at the front bottom, lower left side of the cover.

Check inside your airbox to see if any oil is in the bottom. Also check the oil cooler fins for clogs of mud, dust and dirt. Blast a water hose at it to verify that all debris is cleared. Check the oil temp sensor and cooling fan operation as well.

To check the oil level in the crankcase start the motor and let it run for a minute then shut it off. Wait about 1 minute then check the level on the dipstick by wiping it clean with a cloth and inserting it down to the threads and pull it back out. Do not thread the dipstick in when checking the level, just push down till it stops and pull it back out. The 350 Rancher motor has a dry-sump oiling system so checking the oil requires a different procedure than many other Hondas. Do not overfill it with oil.

Have ya got a copy of the service manual yet?
