I am new to the forum but i need some help...i recently acquired a free 87 250x from my brother in law as a project...after alittle love...(changed oil and filter, air filter, plug, alittle sea foam) bike ran great. i went to brown mnt, NC this weekend to ride and at the end of the day i noticed an oil leak...i started the tear down on the bike for some suspension upgrades (01 raptor 660 rear shock, 300ex front shocks) and to check for the oil leak. while searching for the oil leak i found a crack/hole in the trans housing in the rear! My question is do you think some jb weld:eek: will hold it or should i try to find a new housing. Also since im starting a build on this bike anyone with parts like, pipes or headers, plastics, bars, nerf bars, front tires...im interested! Thanks

oil leak on the rear diff ?..or on lower back of engine ?..if its the rear diff..jb should hold it..i would try jb welding the inside and outside if you want a cheap fix...if you want a perm fix..replace the diff case if this is what your talking about

I have use JB Weld to fix holes in the crankcase several times. Just make sure you clean all the oil and grease off the crankcase or it won't hold. If it's pretty big hole, you can put JB Weld around the edges of the hole and then cut a piece of fiberglass cloth or screen wire and lay over the hole on the JB Weld. Now just spread JB Weld over the fiberglass cloth or screen wire, whichever you use. Make sure you let it dry the full specified time on the directions. If you put it on thick enough, you can even sand it down and paint it and if you do it right, you can't hardly tell it had a hole in it. Remember, the main thing is to make sure you clean all the oil off and let it try for the full amount of time and it will hold. I like to use Acetone to remove the oil and grease because it does a good job dissolving it and it dries quick without leaving any residue.

thanks for the input guys...started the tear down on the bike tonight (im trying to get some pics of the tear down/build)....motor is out of the frame valve cover, head, and cylinder jug all removed but couldnt get the flywheel off so i called it a night...i thought maybe a rock had hit the case and put the crack in it but it appears as tho something inside the case was looking for a way out:(...i was goin to wait till winter to do any motor work but now that its torn apart i dont see the point in waiting, whats your suggestions for more power without squeezing every hp out

Welcome to the forums... These are fun little quads to build up and play on. just to let you know the 300ex front shock are the same shocks as the 250x now 450R shocks would be a nice upgrade.

brown mtn? where do you live? i am in wilkesboro. i recently rebuilt my 250x. i am running a stock cam, fmf exhaust, k&n air filter, JE 80mm big bore kit, newer model 300ex carb that is jetted correctly. it doesn't have the bottom end like a 400ex but i can easily keep up with them. I have a lot of parts.

could be the boss for the decompression button that is on the right side cover close to the kickstart shaft. a have torn down a few engines and found that piece also. may be what it is, may not. but if it is you will need to fix it or get a side cover that is good or your decompression system will not work at all.

Well i guess this is gonna turn into my build thread now...Raceiea your a genius lol, that piece was the decompression boss. I had already put that cover on the shelf as good:) . Got some more done tonight, frame is completely bare and since the sandblaster i have will take till next year i started on the frame with a wire wheel and it did surprisingly well, ill just have to hit the nooks and corners with the sandblaster. So for all you picture fiends heres some pics of the progress....i think they are pretty self explanatory but pic 1 should be the bare frame pic 2 broken decompression boss and pic 3 is the carnage from the floating piece which was on the others side of the trans:)
