Oil drain plug bung busted

6938 Views 18 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  shadetree
Opened up the wife's AT motor last night (just front cover so far) and found literally 1/4 thick sludge at the bottom of the motor.

To top it off, the drain plug bung is busted, so looks like I'm either going to have to fumoto valve it or drop another $150 on a new crankcase half.

Love what you find when you tear in to projects.......

I had the oil drain plug bust too... Threads weren't completely gone but you couldn't tighten up the plug enough so I had to put in a 1/2 inch oversized drain plug. It works but I am very very careful when tightening the plug now lol. Hate it when you have a project and some little bugger comes along and ruins it. Good luck on getting it back together (hopefully without vacuuming your wallet dry lmao).
Jeep and Mud, Unfortunately, you aren't the only ones who have stripped the oil plug threads. They are really touchy and shouldn't be over tightened.
Rather than replace the crank case, get a larger plug (from anything -car, motorcycle, etc). Then, tap out the hole to fit the new plug.
Note: After doing any drilling and tapping, be sure to put a magnet in the bottom of the crank case - to get out any iron filings that might be in there.
Good luck guys.
I actually was able to put in an over sized self-tapping plug without having to tap it first and it works great.
I think the cases are like aluminum or magnesium or something so the magnet idea will not work.

That very true no magnetic material in the cases. :)
yup no magnet will help here in drilling
BUT hate to say this, if you have that much sludge on the bottom, you have good reason to open the case up and clean it out right, as who knows what is in there and if you just flush the crap out of it to get it out, who knows what will be loosened up and back in that motor, and could cause other issues after refilling and running?
SO>< might be a good time to tear into it and clean out right and maybe, tap it while its off and apart?
or replace it?
sludge in a motor is never a good sign?
crap sinks in in and gets trapped, flush it and again, it might jkust end up doing damage once out of the sludge it lived in for who knows how long?

Guess I wasn't very clear in the OP.

This thing is trashed. 420AT I picked up months ago for $500 (missing some parts, but would start and run).

Anyhow, motor is being torn down for a full rebuild. Have a new crank and timing chain that came in a couple weeks ago, and figured I'd try to dig into it a bit. Got the front cover off before I ran out of daylight and found the busted bung. I know it's common, but I've never broken one, and was :icon_ cry: when I found this one was busted.

I've been running fumoto valves in my cars for years, so think I might be the guinea pig for running one on this rancher. I'll have to put a clip on it to keep trail debris from flipping open the lever, but it's a good design, doesn't stick down much further than the OEM drain plug, and will keep me from buying a new crankcase. Since I'm tearing the engine down I can install the fumoto valve in the case 1/2 and then clean it all up really well before I put it back together.

My guess is the kid who sold it to me stripped the plug, put in an oversize plug and then stopped changing the oil. I've dug into a couple of ROUGH Hondas and none have ever had this kind of goop in the bottom. Interestingly enough, the stuff higher up was really clean, just a nice layer of goop in the bottom of the case.

The dual clutch is interesting looking too. Little different than what I'm used to but not as different as I expected.

there is only one clutch inside there bro, they do not have a change clutch. only a centrifugal clutch seeing how they are a automatic.

This is a 420AT shade, not a Hondamatic.
Whole nother animal. Don't know much about it yet, but I do know that unlike the Hondamatic, this one is serviceable.

Odds are the reason the top oil looked good was old owner used to suck oil out the fill hole , then added new oil back in
and did so just before selling to make oil look better than it was, seller can be rather tricky kind when theer is money to be made?
LOL, you didn't see this machine. It is one of those "ride it until it won't go anymore" rigs. I would bet dollars to doughnuts that oil hadn't been changed in thousands of miles (bike ODO shows 4K+ on it).

The oil looked BAD, but again, the front crankcase and bearings looked clean other than the sludge in the bottom. I guess if it was sunk it was at least flushed out somehow. Crank has play so it's going to take a complete tear down, but given that it ran and drove as it was, I know I can fix it. For $500 I won't complain.
Well, maybe I'll complain a little about the dang broken off oil drain plug bung.....

Doesn't have "a" change clutch cause it has 2, in fact. Centrifugal clutch and 2 change clutches, hence the D for Dual in DCT...

welcome back, shady. and yeah i know it was an old thread, but it came to the surface again with other stripped drain plug thread posts, and we know how some of these are viewed by the the thousands. >2600 views on this particular thread.
