Hi, i have a 2007 honda rancher 420 es. I changed my oil at 707 miles and i now have 1286 miles and the light should have come on at 1207. At 850 ish miles i replaced the computer and i reset the computer at 900 ish miles. could that have caused that? I did run synthetic in it for the first time this past oil change also.

If you reset your computer than yes, they go off miles and or expecting life of the oil, not the condition of the oil, my rancher has the standard dash so I don't have a light never even knew they had them but it does surprise me, i would change the oil now, if i where too wait for the light to come on in my truck i think it would be pushing 20,000 miles

as other said, you most likely reset things causing the confusion
but I would also suggest you just keep a log book of PM's you do, and replace oil as oil is needed and NOT just by miles or hours
HOW a motor is use and how long it sits ot doesn't maters IMO as to how often you should be changing the oil
as if you only rode the atv 10 miles a yr, would you really wait for 6-7-8 yrs to hit a "X" amount of hours or miles on the atv before changing it??
that's a LOT of down time for condensation to collect in the oil
all the more so if a atv is only used to plow snow and then put in a heated garage or just warmer area then it gets cold and repeats and parked till next winter
plowing snow along is working a motor more than trail riding
oil is still rather cheap, I'd rather change it TOO often than not enough LOL never heard of new oil destroying a motor, but have heard of LACK of oil changes causing issue's or oil too old or??

your atv , do as you wish, but I would never rely on a idiot light to tell me when to change my oil!

Yeah, you changed the ECM. Don't pay any attention to whether the oil change indicator works or not. Take charge and change the oil before you reach that recommended interval.

I will definitely take your advice. thanks! I ran synthetic Castro with superior wet clutch protection. any other great brands to try this time?

lots of great oils out there today, and suggesting "X" brand tends to starts long treads on MY oil is better than your oil and or just ramblings
as long s the oil meets the wet clutch requirements, any oil is good to be honest as long as you change it before it goes bad!
I personally been using amsoil 4stroke 0-40 for 20 yrs in my atv and been very happy, but I admit there are many oils of just as good qualities
I am also a guy that prefers to use ONE brand weight oil and stick with it for life of motor!
not sure what could happen if you mix things all the time, as I know in most chemicals there are reactions when you add and mix them! most likely NOTHING bad would happen, but in life when ever I can try and rule out possible problems I tend to do what I can!
not about brand loyalty really, more along the if its works well why switch and or risk a side effect!
I again am also a guy that changes oil more often than more too! but also bene known to be hard on motors more than some as well, so, peace of mind has a price tag I guess LOL

I run Rotella T6 5W-40 in my 14 Rancher. I've run the Honda HP4S full synthetic in it as well.

I change mine at even 500 mile intervals normally. Much easier to keep up with oil changes at 500, 1000, 1500, 2K etc.

If I have issues and have to change at something other than those even 500 mile increments, I still change when it hits the even 500 miles number again. Makes it easy to know that when it hits a 500 mile mark it needs to be changed, and I never go over the recommended oil change interval that way.

Oil is cheap.
