I just bought this 07 Rancher 400at. Bought it running but will not move. Ive done much research on all the issues that cause it not to move but im still stuck.
So i know the shift motor is good and working. It will move through each gear in esp.

It looks like the angle sensor has been replaced once or twice. The bike came with three of them and holes are drilled in the plastic to replace it.

Also he replaced the ecu for whatever reason. I do have the old one still. He claims a code flashed that lead him to replace it. Now the bike is not throwing any codes whatsoever.

If i raise the bike on blocks and start it and put it in gear the rear wheels will move but very very slowly. I have to pin the throttle and it will reach about 11mph but when the bike is on the ground it wont move as all.

Is this a clutch issue?? Or is something electronic not allowing it to apply power to the Tranny?? If so how can I diagnose the clutch etc.

Quick update. I put the old ecu on the bike, started it up and it was giving me a flashing code of 5. Which is angle sensor. So i took on the the newer ones i had and replaced it and correctly installed with turning the spring back etc. i then did the computer reset and now the flashing code is gone but still no dice, bike has same issues. Will not move.

I know many people here have had issues with this quad. I hope someone can help. Doing more work to it, after running it for a few minutes, old ecm was throwing a code 12, went down every check in the shop manual, tested each connection etc. did continuity tests. Everything checked out. So I replaced it with the new ecm and did the initial setting procedure, got the wheels to spin 21mph but that was maxing the throttle and it set it. Same issue persist. Quad wont move. I can stop the wheels with my hand. Its like it has no power. 4wd does work and so does reverse just has no power. Is this a burt clutch issue? If so what needs to be replaced????

Try changing the oil with Rotella t4 it's a hydrostatic Trans so there picy about oil
Yeah i know it needs certain oil to be reliable but just to move? i would think even with the wrong oil or dry it would move and then burn up. ive checked the oil, looks fresh and clean, looked down fill cap on right side of quad, that oil screen is super clean. I can try and swap oils but still seems more mechanical of an issue.

Well don't seem to be getting much help here. But i have made progress. Decided to take front case off to get access to the clutch. Had to remove the oil cooler, fan, and unbolt front diff and move it forward to get it off the shaft. Then took the case off, found the clutch to be totally Burt up, clutch basket with deep groves. looks like someone took a blow torch to it. So i replaced all of that but still no luck, same issue. Then i decided to check the oil pressure. Had to drill out a m10x1.25 bolt to make a custom fitting for a oil pressure gauged. And what do ya know, NO OIL pressure. So i took everything back apart, removed the oil pump gear and it was broken where its supposed to sit in the grove on the shaft. So I've ordered that gear and hoping that solves the issue.

Welp, still no luck. This is driving me nuts. Replaced clutch and replaced the broken gear. still no luck and still no oil pressure. Is the oil pump bad???? even with the test port bolt out and bike running nothing comes out that hole. My gauge reads nothing at any rpm. I've tested the gauge it works. I know the oil pump isnt seized or broken like ive read some others had. Do the wear out?? I checked the oil pressure release valve that's on the case cover, its okay. I wish someone here would respond to this thread!

So, I think I have finally found the problem. no thanks to this thread of course. But none the less i will continue to update my progress here incase any poor soul purchases a rancher 400 and has similar issues. I have removed the oil pump and found that it was locked up. It has broken my new gear and now i know why the last one broke. I opened the oil pump up only to find the internal pump broken into many pieces and they locked up the pump causing the outer gear to keep breaking and therefore no oil pressure which means the transmission wont engage. So new gear and oil pump has been ordered. I am also flushing out the oil cooler and inspecting what I can to make sure i get any metal shavings etc. out of the engine before running it again. My advice to anyone who owns this quad and is having trany issues is simple, buy a manual and read it! it will tell you and walk you through how to diagnosis and fix any issue. My first thought would be to check for codes and solve as needed, and if no codes then check the oil pressure. If no codes present and it has oil pressure then the hondamatic is done or you have other mechanical issues that are rare. But oil pumps seem to be an issue on this quad as ive seen online along with simple sensors. I will update my progress.
