i noticed my battery has been just strong enough to crank the engine over on my 04 fourtrax 4x4 400. i put the meter to it and showed 11.50 at half throttle and went up to 11.80 when idle. what is the problem here? its a new gell battery by the way that was put on early this year.

Welcome to the fourm. Your rectifier is bad from what you told me. Do you have a maintainer for your battery? If not then I strongly suggest you get one like a Battery Tender they will keep your battery at peak charge when not in use. You can clip them on or hard wire them in with the ring terminal and have the plug coming out just under your seat like I do.

Disconnect neg cable, check bat voltage, if low charge battery for 24hrs, have bat tested, NAPA can test, if bat good, disconnect any accessories from bat, test again, if low still, check wiring and connectors and ohms test stator.

Ditto, you wanna have it tested but from what he said I'm thinking the same thing, rectifier is going out.

Check wires and connections, how old is the battery? Used for plowing or high demands? Replaced a battery Sat., Sunday found disconnected (was loose connection, then not), smiled :smile cheap fix even with the new battery. Batteries do not last forever, up here with the plowing 2-3 years.
