I recently purchased a 2013 Honda Rancher 420 for $500 from a guy who was moving out of town and needed to get rid of it. He said that the clutch went out and he replaced it and he must not have put it together right because he rode it down the road and the new clutch went out as well and he had to push it back.

Anyway I have been trying to get it running. When I turn the key the lights on the dash come on, but the neutral light doesn't come on and it says "-" under gear position. I know it is in neutral since I rolled it off the trailer when he dropped it off at my house.

What is likely to be the culprit here? After some googling I noticed some people saying the "neutral switch" or "neutral safety switch" could have gone out, but I can't figure out if the ES models like mine even have this switch. I also found some mention of a "gear position switch" which should be on the inside of the rear crankcase cover, which he would have had to remove to change the clutch. Also some people were mentioning an "angle sensor" which would be on the rear crankcase cover.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

On the clutch going out right after he changed it , he may have pinched a clutch plate when installing the clutch -------- when I pinched a plate once , it drove for about a half a block , it was feeling like the clutch was slipping then quit pulling all together , when you stack the friction disc and plates the last one in the stack can get misaligned with the teeth and get pinched

neutral switch/gear position switch is in the rear of the motor, the clutch is in the front, not sure how changing the clutch could effect this switch ??..lol.

Would this keep the atv from starting?

Try holding the right hand brake in and starting it this allows it to be started in gear, it wont fix the problem but maybe you can just get it running be your dash thinks it's in gear
I tried that, the electric start button actually doesn't do anything, I am assuming that is because it doesn't know it's in neutral. If i use a screwdriver to jump the starter solenoid the engine will turn over and try to start but still wont.

My bad, the motor has a new rear crankcase cover on it, and he gave me the old crankcase cover in a bucket of tools that he was using to replace the clutch, so I just assumed you had to remove it.

it will roll over and try to start when i use the right hand brake, but it still won't start. if i don't hold the right hand brake then nothing happens when i press the starter button

If I hold the right brake and press the starter button it will turn over and try to start, but still isn't able to. The starter button doesn't do anything if I don't hold the right brake. I had just been taking a screwdriver to the start solenoid to try to get it to start.

Thanks. I went ahead and purchased a new angle sensor and neutral safety switch. I'll take the rear crankcase cover off and replace them both when they come in and see if it works. There is a "shift drum position switch" on the inside of the rear crankcase cover as well that I'd like to go ahead and replace while I have it off, but I'm not having any luck finding one. does anyone know the part number for this or where I can get one?

I don't know when they started it but 08 rancher will start in gear if i pull the right brake, the neutral light is not on. I have a manuel shift with the standard dash just lights on it. Im sure you have dash panel with all the displays on it but it should still start holding the right brake, i know it wont fix whats wrong with why it doesnt show neutral but I just thought you could get it going to hear it run since you just got it
