I just got a '02 trx250te, got it running smooth & all shifts are good, but when I shift to 5th - nothing. It's like I put in neutral. You can tell it well abused before I got it. Any ideas what could be wrong?

welcome to the forums. more than likely, the problem is in the shift drum, which means a full engine tear down to get to the tranny. BUT !!!, before you go tearing the engine out ?!, have a look at the front of the shift drum on the ratchet paw area, look for any damage right there. front of engine, cover must come off, lower right side when facing straight ahead.

Thanks.....so, if that's damaged, I can replace or does that mean total rebuild? Will it hurt to run without 5th? I know I just can't go too fast....lol

The only thing to worry about is the possibility of a piece of broken gear etc will get caught in the transmission and ruin many more parts

your flirtin with disaster if you ride it, and it has broken gear teeth somewhere in the motor ?, also ?..5th gear also runs 4th gear, in other words..sooner or later, your going to lose 4th gear as well.
