It is pretty straight forward, Take all your plastics off so the front is naked. There is a small collar held on by 2 bolts. This is located about 2-3" below the handle bars. On the very bottom of the quad there is a cotter pin holding a nut on the very bottom of the stem. Remove the pin, then the bolt. You will also need to disconnect your tie rods from the steering shaft. As long as you don't rotate the tie rod at all your alignment will still be correct when you put the tie rods back on.

Red gave you some good advice, but I will supplement a little with some pictures.
BTW, when I do this, I don't remove the tie rod ends from the steering arm, I just let it all drop down from the bottom of the steering shaft and raise the steering shaft up.

This is from a 1995-2000 manual, so there could be some minor differences, I can't remember. I think it is the same setup, though.
