Hi all. Glad I found this site. I bought a '85 atc 70 last summer at a yard sale. Have soooo enjoyed riding it! Sat most of the winter, got it out couple weeks ago. Having a few issues.... so thought Id come here to read and maybe find some assistance. Oh, and Im not your typical atc fan: I'm a female. LOL. Today, after not being able to ride for a couple of days, I took the carb off, to see if I could locate the problem (wouldnt stay running). After I took it off, I opened the fuel filter and discovered it to be completely clogged with gunk. Cleaned it out; then checked the tubes coming out of that (where the fuel flows from the tank) - one of them was completely plugged. Soaked it for awhile, then took the air compressor to it - finally got it cleaned out too. I also filled the tank with the gas I had drained, shook it around in there real well, and emptied it again. Did that twice.... looks kinda rusty-ish. Got everything back together, and I can now ride again. However, it just doesn't seem to have very good power. Like, I cannot climb a hill in second, I have to put it down to first gear to get up a hill. Any ideas??

Welcome to the site... i think you are the 2nd femalr on here! MUCH WELCOME

Did you pull the jets out of the carb? You should pull the carb again all pull everything apart. Clean EVERY nook and cranny. Use a torch tip cleaner to poke through all the holes... Also I have heard of people using CLR cleaner to get all the rust/corrossion out

More info on my atc70

Been reading through some of the info here. Found an article about the spark plug. When I checked that, mine has a dark dry black sooty look at the tip. The info on that stated:

Dry: Black Soot Buildup

Air/fuel mixture is too rich, the carburetor settings are incorrect, or the flame arrestor is dirty or has mounting problems.
Spark plug heat range is too cold for the operating conditions.
Ignition system problems causing a weak or intermittent spark.

More info first:
First, the lever is broke off the choke - I can still turn it, but there is no lever. Before I took the carb off, I had to turn that thing clockwise about half way to get it to start, and then I could turn it back to about 1/4 to ride. Now, I have to turn it all the way clockwise to get it to start and stay running. If I attempt to turn it all the way counterclockwise, it dies. Either way - I have to keep on the throttle, or it will die - it wont idle without me giving it gas, no matter where the choke it set.

How do I check the air/fuel mixture? flame arrestor?

first off..welcome to the forums..second..you may want to pull the carb back out..and take all the jets out..the pilot screw...which your asking about..has a tiny tiny o-ring in the very bottom of it..soo..if it were me..i would just do a complete carb over haul < a carb rebuild kit >..it probally is due for one ayway...after you do all of that..lightly seat the new pilot screw in..turn the screw out from the seated position about 2 full turns..you may want to get the bike warm enough before you try this..this is if it will idle long or run long enough for you.

Welcome to the forums!...if it ran well Well before you stored it I would say a really good carb. Cleaning should do the trick. Clean all jets and passages in carb. And new filter. Clean the tank real good and let us know from there.
