Great Forum,,,,just what I needed for my 87' 350 fourtrax:
As I get my old ATV out of long storage, I need to do some basics and appreciate any thoughts/directions:
* posted my question on fan/sensor issue. How do I know it (fan and/or sensor) work? Doesn't seem to kick in,,,although I now know it has to get Hot.
* drained bad gas,,,will replace very bad fuel filter,,,, any thoughts on cleaning tank. I intend on swishing fresh gas a few times/?????.
* as you know, they did not come with the safety foot plates. Since some new youngsters may ride it,hunting, are there OEM plates, retrofits???
* could not believe the $28 price for the gas filter. Any advice on where are parts at real world prices (yes, I know I'll pay more for old machine parts),
* what are top tips on refurb of this ATV?? (bushings?,shocks?,pump???).

Again, great forum. Thanks for any ideas you may have for this novice.

The carb will most likely need to be cleaned, Replace the float and needle while you're in there.

Shadetree just finished restoring one of those, he may be able to help you with some of your questions.

If you just want to check the fan motor, itself, to see if it's working, unplug the hot wire going to the fan and just run 12V from the battery straight to the fan.

Here is the oil cooling fan troubleshooting section from the repair manual.

first off..get a service manual..you will thank me for this !..second..your gas tank should have a drain plug in the bottom of it..remove it..drain all the old gas out. on the cooling fan..you can unplug it from the wiring harness..and hook it up direct to 12v dc battery to see if the fan itself is good..if the fan is good..and after you ride/run your bike hard and long..and the fan won't kick in..then your fan relay control unit is bad..it's under the front left fender in a rubber holder these are not cheap ( this is if you can even find one ! ). purchase a carb rebuild kit for your carb..even though you may not think you need it..it's always a good idea to replace these. alot of after market atv or motor cycle shops sells them..don't go to a dealer for them..unless your rich ?..lol. as for your fuel filter..do not purchase it from a dealer..they are way to high..lol..you can pick one up from any auto repair place..auto zone, advanced auto..or even walmart for that matter..it doesn't have to match to oem size..as long as it does what it's suppose to do..this is all it matters. fuel pump- most go out..spec if they are old..( most are on these years of atv's )..do not..i repeat..do not go to a dealer..first..good luck trying to get them to find one...even if they can still be found..they are around 300 bucks !!..do this..go to advanced auto..tell them you need a low pressure fuel pump ..i think it's around 4 psi ?..they are about 40 bucks..they are round ( very important here ) they are the same size as the oem fuel pump..even though the hook up lines on them are facing a different way..this is nothing you can't handle with some new fuel lines anyway. front brakes- if your piston's are froze up..remove them off the hub's..find a grease fitting that screws into the calibar on the hydrolic line fitting..with a grease gun..they pop right out easy. valves- do not try to adjust the valves after your bike is hot..or even warm for that matter..only adjust them when the bike is cold..or you will never get them set right. they do not make or offer after market foot holds for these bikes..if you want any on it..you will have to fab your own..sorry jack. forget about shocks..unless you just hit the lottery...lol..they do not come cheap over 200 bucks each !..bushings..as like front tie rods..i'm sure you still can get those..at least mine were still good..so i didn't need to replace them...now..on to the big cash..lol..the front and rear ring gear..pinion gear and axle..this is where it really gets high dollar..thats to say..if you can even still get them....mine just needed new beargings and seals..i'm sure your's probally will need them sooner or later. they aren't to high to replace. if you need any help on this bike..give me a holler. i'm sure i can help you out..good luck..oh..sorry for the long post ppl. it's kinda hard not to give advice on this bike in a short post...lol.

Fantastic input. Very much appreciate the experience on this forum. Did drain the gas... pretty bad. Filter was really bad. Did order on line pdf manual. This ATV is old (87'),but, has very low hours on it. Used during deer hunting each year and little else. I have some more land, now, and would like to haul small trailer and stuff.
Thanks for the part (s) buying advice. I would like to keep the 350,,, but, got a bit worried when the dealer scuffed at my question about the price of the fuel filter ($28),,,,,,started to think about the price of real serious parts,,,if and when I need them.

I am going to have a friend weld some aluminum screen/plates for the safety foot protection. Or, get off of 'dead' ATV and fab it to mine. Should work.

I suspect I will be back to the forum again,,,, glad I found it. It's a Great Day !
