I've been wanting to get an ATV since I was 14 years old

Fast forward 14 MORE years, and I run across a deal I just can't pass up.
(to see my whole gallery of pics, click here!)

The previous owner was a local racer, but he took good care of his toys. Great maintenance schedule after every race, and ALL aftermarket parts on her. So many new parts that the only original things are some of the motor and the frame, and the frame as been reinforced and power coated.
Big Bore kit, new suspension, arms, rims&tires, rearend, carb, you name it.

Rides like an absolute DREAM. The corners on my stupid lot are so smooth. I feel like I'm drifting a car, not a quad. final price? 2000$ cash. I couldn't say no!

But she is older. 2001 ridden hard and put away wet. I'm 3rd owner. I've run into a few problems, but thanks to this website I've solved my first major one.

Major to me, that is. It was only the stupid neutral switch wire that goes to crank case there was just hanging. But being a TOTAL ATV noob, I had no clue what to look for. She ran find when you push started it, but would not light up anything.

I read the stickied post, got the 99-02 400ex service manual I found here in PDF form, SAT MY HAPPY BUTT DOWN WITH THE MANUAL AND A VOLT METER, and had it done in less then 5 minuets.

I am running into small wear and tear problems. Plus I went through a field with these on the ground yesterday too....

Didn't they use those things in freaking WWII?

Both front tires are flat :( and it's only my 4th day having her!

But oh well, such is the life of an ATV rider. :) totally worth it. I picked up some plug stuff form Wal-Mart for ATVs. I'm praying that it's not in the side walls!

I've come here to get maintenance tips on older atv's and what I should watch for as I ride so I don't incur BIG bucks worth of repairs. Thanks for all the info and the service manual and everything so far! I plan on being here with my yellow machine for quite some time.

and if anyone is form Illinois and knows the good riding spots, hit me up (South of Joliet area)! Me and a buddy with a 250 dirt bike want to go out for a weekend this summer at the very least!

I have a 200 400EX and they are a great machine. Check all your front wheel bearings, swing arm bearings, wheel hubs air filter. If you havent already done it I would go ahead and change the oil and filter just to be on the safe side. I like the yellow quads. Welcome to the forums.

ha! I know that those damn things are almost worth more then what I bought the quad for. :)

Thanks for that quick short list. I'm gonna go bright and early tomorrow to patch the tires and run through the 3rd chapter in the manual on maintenance. I'll add what you said to the "to-do" list.

I did notice a bit of "gray oil" issue, but when I did get to run her around, we have a bayou down by my old house off the Kankakee RIver. Lots of splashing and mud pit riding. So I'm not too worried. I just hope I can find a filter from the locals tomorrow for her when I change the oil.
