Hi there, Looking for recomendations on cleaning up the 2007 400ex I just picked up. It is beyond dirty. Not sure if its ever been cleaned under the plastics. There is a K&N filter on it with the outerwears cover and the airbox has a million holes drilled into it. Looks like mud has just been splashed into the airbox due to it not being sealed.
After seeing how all of this is put together, is the snorkel and the plastic tray under the gastank even necessary? What does all this plastic do other than collect dirt. My airbox is pretty much open anyway. so can this stuff be eliminated to clean things up a bit?
thanks!

Plastic under gas tank is actually a heat wall to try to.keep the engine heat from getting to the gas tank and possibly boiling. The 300ex's had that problem alot although i have seen many 400ex's without it and cause no problems. I wouldnt suggest removing it though. The snorkle can be removed 100%. Use a lid off a spray paint can in the hole in the airbox is what everyone usually does. It will slide right in and clamp with the factory clamp even. Remember though it you decide to put a lid back on it the snorkle will be necessary again. I run an ehs powerlid with a uni filter and have been through some real mudders without any issues. Filter will have a tiny bit of mud splashed on it but none in it or the intake boot.

Thanks Slammed Ranger. I hope to learn alot from you in the future. I watched the video breakdown of your mods. your bike looks great. I'll be slowly doing something similar hopefully. This next winter I have big plans. haha!

Oh and I got rid of the clunky clutch lever/e-brake deal and put new bars and pro-taper clutch perch in its place. What else can I remove to save weight and make things cleaner?

Thanks again.
