I picked up what I’ve always wanted over the summer. The tank know as the fourtrax 300.
it came in for brake work as a 18 year old boy got a great deal from an elderly man holding on to this. After a few hundred bucks in brake work he took it home and put brand new rims and tires on and took it for one ride. Swamped the rear end and trashed the new shoes. I found not only his rear brake but the rear diff was full of mud and water.
after some pricing and some talk I ended up buying it from the customer for $400 plus eat my latest parts and labor bill. I bought it strictly for deer hunting and knowing I’d be putting some time and money in it with the diff in bad shape.
i started my work on it this past week. Diff bearings was shot and seals. Long story short, the dreaded pinion bearing 🤬 was factory and super stuck. Went thru the paces and different tricks to remove it. Even let a local dealer try but got only as far as I had. Ended up busting the casting the holds the pinion bearing 🙄.Everythingelse went pretty good. Pinion shaft bearing, case bearings and whatnot. So I’mwaiting on a replacement diff case to come and gotta salvage the hardware off the old. Motor and all seems strong and will give it a makeover adter deer season.
When he replaced the wheels and tires he went up to 12 inch wheels with 25” tires. They rub when you turn up front. Was wondering if anyone has tried the 2” lift and how it worked out? I don’t want to make it top heavy as I will be walking deer out of very rough places with it. The lift would be cheaper than buying new tires and these literally have1 ride on them.
it shows unavailable thru the OEM dealer sites but I would like to have the cooling fan upgrade. If anyone knows where I can get the whole kit I’d appreciate it. If it’s like most carb atvs, the fan would be controlled thru the CDI so I would need that included. Gotta get a winch and some upgraded lighting, any other upgrades that’s worthwhile you guys are doing?

So this appears to be a 96-97? My 93 has the optional fan kit, working light kit and winch. I also powdercoated the OEM wheels to match the body

Good unit a lot of owners upgrade to an 87-89 Foreman rear end but it take fab skills bc the 300 is a single shock setup and the Foreman is a dually.

here’s an OEM fan kit

Download the service manual and check parts links in my signature block below. I am only familiar with fan kit installs to 1997.

i prefer the stock tire combo; larger wheels and tires are not my thing. Of course I don’t hunt in an area that has a lot of swamps

It is a 1998 model. 93-2000 should be the same. ‘92 was its on machine and the prior mostly interchange. Is your fan kit hooked to a temp sensor or is it manual toggle? Toggle doesn’t bother me. I had to set up a polairs sportsman this week to run off toggle.

My 93 uses a fan control unit in place of the overheat alarm box. The option works because the CDI and overheat alarm are separate components. On the 98-00, isn’t the overheat alarm integrated with the CDI?

I’ve found that the FCU from a 96-00 Foreman will work as a replacement, so maybe the entire fan assembly would work on yours, except maybe for the fan ductwork

Look up the parts diagrams for the 98-00 cooling fan to see how it mounts. I don’t know much about it.
otherwise you could mount an aftermarket fan and handlebar switch

If you don't mind a little fab work look for a PC800 cooling fan on Ebay. My last two cost me around 20 bucks shipped for the pair. Both my 95 & 97 have them....As well as my Pacific Coast. Toggle controls my 95 and toggle/thermostat controls my wifes 95. In case she forgets.

Thank you for the info! A lot of useful help on this site! Ride red!

The 2 inch lift doesnt make 300's top heavy, they're really low to start with.
Those front rims are rear rims. I'd get a set of used 12x6 oem front rims off any honda/yamaha/suzuki atv, they're all the same and will fit right fixing your rubbing issue.
I dont like ITP detla rims at all, they have the wrong offset, wrong width and a crappy outer lip that drives dirt into the tires bead. I bought a set years ago to replace bent stock front rims, couldnt keep the dirt out of the beads and didnt like the ertxa width. I ended up straightening the bent oem wheels and putting them back on.
My dad had a 300 I used alot and my friends had/have them, none of us had a fan kit and no one ever over heated. I wouldnt worry about finding an oem fan kit...
The stock lights are really bad, we had a 55 watt tractor light on the pod with a home made bracket which was pretty bright and dirt cheap, others have put small led's in place of the stock lights. Replacing the stock lights with small square LED's is likely best for hunting as you can still load up the front rack.
The 300's frames get damaged pretty easy, I'd buy or make a good skid plate.

Yes the kid bought these and he threw the old OEM rims in as well. Just hate to not use some new tires. Any experience with the 2” lift? I’m don’t care about looks, just would be cheaper than new tires for the OEM rims. I do what to do the disk brake upgrade on the front after deer season, I know the 12” rim note on the purchase form. I’ll have to check the size of the OEM rims. I’m not too worried about the fan or overhearing. It would be nice to have if it was cheap enough. I’m an atv mechanic for a living so I’ll probably do a too end and valve job to freshen everything up as well.

Every one and their dog runs a 2 inch lift in 300's it works fine and the atv is still kinda low compared to new ones. Look at the axle angle, their so flat a 2 inch lift doesnt hurt a thing. 420 rancher front shocks also double as a 2 inch lift while riding smoother to boot.
I ddint say anything about not running your new tires, I meant get the right 12 inch front rims for them so they fit right. The tires are fine the front rims are wrong.
I bought a pair of used 12 inch front rims for 40 bucks not long ago.
You can bend the lower fender bracket pulling the front fenders back a bit so the tires wont rub too.
