86 Honda Fourtrax 350 noise

I have a 86 Honda Fourtrax 350 that has a noise in the engine. It sounds like a chattering sound. I thought it was valves so I adjusted them and still didn’t go away. So I bought a 87 parts atv for $100. I took the top end out of the parts one and put it in my good one and still same noise. I checked the head and see no indication that the piston is hitting the head. Now I did not use the parts atv valve cover. Could that be the problem? Could I have bad rocker arms? Also I checked the timing chain and it seemed tight.
I’m lost. I’ll post a video of it as soon as I figure out how.

Thanks for the welcome. Hopefully I can find someone who knows what I’m dealing with. I’m gonna put the parts valve cover on tomorrow and see if that fixes the problem. Will let you all know. Just hope it’s not to serious don’t have much $.

odds are, your connecting rod is bad ?, or your valves are not set right ?, or your cylinder is worn out, and your getting piston slap.

Today I am gonna our parts valve cover on and see what that does. If it does nothing I’m gonna let the neighbor work on it. He does this for a living. I’m no mechanic and don’t have the tools to do a compression test (even if I did I have no idea how to do it ?). If it is the cylinder or connecting rod I’ll let the neighbor do it as I would mess something up. When I checked the timing chain it seemed tight. It was a bugger to get back on the gear. One thing I didn’t check was play in the piston. I’m supposed to take the atv to my neighbor this Saturday so I will keep you all updated. I’ll also let you know if the parts valve cover works. I doubt it but worth a shot. Thanks all.

Ok can someone run by me how to adjust valves again. From what I know I can find top dead center when I do do I adjust the intake valves. Then how do I adjust the exhaust side. Do I keep it on that t mark and adjust the exhaust side at the same time. Someone told me that you have to go around again to do the exhaust. I’m so confused.
Any help will be appreciated.

Quote " When I checked the timing chain it seemed tight. It was a bugger to get back on the gear. "

how did you go about checking the timing chain tension and have to put the chain back on the gear ?

you adjust both valves at the same time with the T mark in the window on the compression stroke not the exhaust stroke

I put the chain back on the cam gear like you put a chain back on a bicycle. So I adjust the intake wich is closer to the seat and the exhaust valves wich is closer to the front of atv at the same time if I’m thinking correctly.

I am trying to figure out why you took the chain off , or did it come off on it's own ------- to check the slack in the timing chain , you don't remove the chain , you remove the tensioner , let it unload it's spring tension then try to put it back into the hole on the jug and measure the distance between the jug and tensioner

I see in your pick the cam lobes are facing up , when you install the cam and chain , you put the T mark in the window and the cam lobes facing down , then install the sprocket and chain

I’m am so confused and dumb. Ok so I need to adjust both the exhaust and intake valves. How do I do that. Tell me like I’m a dummy. Do I put it on t for both exhaust and intake? Do I do intake first and then spin it one revolution and then do the exhaust? I noticed there’s and F mark and there’s also two other little marks and then there’s the T mark. What are the other marks for. Thanks.
