Welcome to the forums.
Im not familliarwith the power steering on atvs but I am on just about everything else when you get bumpy steering or hard steering there is usually either low powersteering fluid or air has gotten into the system you can ususally purge that out by removing the fluid cap and while it's running slowly turn the bars alll the way one way ten slowly back the other way works on autos . Or you may have a clogged orfice tube they are usually where the inlet lines connect to the steering mechanism.. there are some pretty sharp guys on here that know these Utility quads better than I do. good luck.

The 07 420 had power steering? I wasn't aware they added PS to the rancher until 08 or 09.

In any case, the PS on ATV's is electric. If it over heats it will cut off, so look for anything that might cause it to get too hot.

ADDED: Yes, looks like 09 is the first rancher with PS....they put it on the 07 foreman first to introduce it.

If you have a rancher and it's only a year old, take it to the shop as it's probably still under warranty.
