Well guys, I got tired of my slow 300 utilities, so I bought a different kind of 300 today. I think I got a good price on it even tho it's got a few things that need fixing.

It used to be my close friends, he knows it the best and owned it the longest of all of us. He got it from his uncle who was on base flying planes at Area 51 supposedly, lol. He bought it new some where in Nevada and barley rode it in the dunes and such. The uncle is the one who put such nice parts on it before my friend got it. My buddy babied the crap out of it and took very good care of it. I'd say He knows this fourwheeler better than the guys that built it at Honda. My friend wanted a rancher 420 and sold it to another friend of ours who never rode it, and after about a year of it sitting in his garage, it got sold to another friend of ours who has had it a couple years and was kinda hard on it and he sold it to me today.

It's got some kind of aftermarket racing plastics, some really sweet Elka suspension that rides like a cloud, and a pretty fresh top end. It runs like a top but of course I'm gonna service it all as soon as I get the time.

I think I did pretty good being I paid 1900 bucks.

I'm going to put a new grab bar/cooler holder on the rear, a new front bumper, new foot guards, maybe some hand guards, an hid in the headlight, and it might need a new clutch, not sure yet.

I already took off the light bar and the bent rear grab bar. This will be my "build thread" I guess.
Hopefully it'll be a good one to me.

Happy to find out it already has an hid in the headlight for the low beam lol. I've been riding it most of the night and so far I love it.

Nice!

I'd love to ride a nicely setup 300 to compare to my 400 just for S&G's lol.

It's hard to tell, but it looks like you might need an alignment in the front based on that 1 picture.

Looking forward to following the thread!

I can do your comparison. I had a 330 with a stage 2 web cam full pipe ported head 400ex carb 400ex front end conversion works shocks front and rear. And a stock 06 400ex walked away from me. Completely different worlds. Dont get me wrong they are fun bikes! Torque for days. But they are limited by the internal gearing that cant really be changed. I tried all the sizes of front and rear sprockets i could and it was never fast. Quick at best.

Yeah my buddies 400ex will walk this thing like it's sitting still.

But it's plenty fast for me lmao.

I put my big gun exhaust and wrapped header on it from my 380fw project, and I must say I prefer the system that was on here when I bought it.

I've also ordered a front bumper and a rear grab bar. They should be here the 4th.

Just a quick update, not a lot has changed, but I dig get some new tires, I really wanted bear claws but the smallest size I liked are huge. 22s in the back. It needs a new set of sprockets and a chain anyway, so I need to figure out what to order to l gear it down.

Anyone ever 400ex swap a 300ex?

You would have alot of work ahead of you. The dimensions of the motor would be the hardest part. On the 400ex the motor goes all the way back to the swing arm pivot bolt where 300ex's dont. So they are longer front to back. I would have to imagine taller. You would be completely re-designing the 300ex frame structure. Im sure it can be done. Heck ive seen a 400ex frame with a turbo crotch rocket motor in it. Anything is possible with alot of fabrication skill.

I was comparing my friends 400ex to my 300ex. It seems doable with a lot of work, but I didn’t notice the swingarm part. I did see that the 400 has two header pipes coming off the head whereas I have 1 now, and those frame rails in front of the head would have to certainly be reworked.

My 300exs motor is starting to make a little noise from the cam chain. I could fix it but it won’t be any faster, and as was stated earlier in this thread a built 300ex won’t hang with a stock 400, and I need all the help I can get to spin these bear claws.

I have seen people swap a think its a 350x three wheeler motor in them before. I know the swingarm is like a direct bolt on upgrade aswell. Just google 400ex and 300ex swingarms. The tube where the pivot bolt goes through on the 300ex is a solid tube side to side. The 400ex has a gap in the center. That gap is where the bolt always seizes in the engine cases. Crap design. But there was no other way to fit the xr400 dirtbike motor in an atv frame. Which is what honda did with the 400ex.
